Bluetooth Retrofit Kit from an Austin company

A local install company, that advertises in the local BMW chapter magazine, recommended that I contact the company below to pick up this kit for them to install.

BimmerNav is apparently located in Austin. The web has some positive comments about them and that they have done group buys with BMW groups.

Can anyone comment on this retrofit?

Here is a thread on the subject

If you are in Austin and want to swing by I can show you how it works in your car.

It works well and a number BMW owners have done this same install. Check out this forum for good information on the BMW Bluetooth system as well http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/bluetooth/

With aftermarket Bluetooth in a Z8 what functions do you have and which functions do you not have as compared to a factory installation in a car originally designed for Bluetooth?

This is a BMW solution. It just has been configured so that it retrofits perfectly in the Z8. It is the same Bluetooth system as found in 2006 X5s.

Why does it only configure when ignition is off?

The idea is to have the button held down when it turns on. I am not sure why it was designed like that, but they wanted to have a process so that people would not crash cars while pairing a phone and driving I guess.

You only have to pair the phone ONCE. After the phone is paired you do not really need that button except to activate voice recognition.

Practicality of the bluetooth in our cars

It is appealing to have a bluetooth system in our cars. I would imagine though, with the wind buffeting of the Z8, that even the upgraded microphone would be near useless at speed with the top down. Can you share with us what you have heard from Z8 owners who have installed it?

it seems to work as well as the CPT-8000 phone system that originally came in the car. With the top down at 120 it is hard to hear the passenger next to you.

Most people are happy with the way the system works. Some guys have even gotten really creative and installed a RAZR snap in adapter to charge the phone and boost the antenna with the Z8 cellphone booster

    follow up

The Razr mod is pretty nifty.
I never used the original CPT-8000 system, so I would be curious to know how the bluetooth works at 70 mph with and without the top down. Did you receive any feedback, Martin?

People are generally really happy with BMW's new solution. It takes away from the limitation to only use a BMW branded phone.

I for one use mine all of the time. shoot me an email and I can give you a couple Z8 customers contact info if you want to talk to others directly.

For one, you can no longer activate them with the carriers because of the lack of support of E911 capabilities. If you currently have service with a carrier, you can not even change your plan or they will drop you from service.

Could you build an "ultimate" kit, cost no option, and using a Sony Ericsson P990 in a docking station (adapter)?

I could look into the cradle for that phone as I am not familiar with that version.

here are the versions that are currently available from BMW

Nothing but relatively unexciting phones. How about RAZR Maxx or RAZR v3i? Would prefer Maxx or another quad band phone with EDGE (e.g., Sony Ericsson Z710i).

As long as this Sony ericsson holder would fit under the arm rest, I am sure it woudl be possible
    http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?...e=ps&pid=10533

I have the RAZR V3M myself. I think it is similar to the Vci, but it has a 1 Gig memory card.

As long as the Razr Max is similar in size I am sure it will be fine. From the photos the connector looks the same.

I could do some research based on which way you wanted to go.

Let's go with three ultimate kits using the RAZR Maxx! Kits need to be ready by March and should include latest ULF, best microphone, BMW pairing switch, latest CD-MP3 players, etc. and anything else that might upgrade the Z8. Feel free to contact me at [email protected].
