    Z8 Values

In April of this year I purchased a 6000 mile 2002 silver/black Z8 for 243K. The car is flawless and came with all of the important accessories i.e. Coffee Table Book, Window Sticker, etc. Yesterday on BaT a 5600 mile 2000 Silver/Black example sold for 206K (with buyer’s premium). That is obviously a 37K difference. I attribute much of this difference to the obvious changes in many markets these days. What I did discover however is that 60 Z8s and Alpinas have been presented on BaT since the beginning of the year. While the Z8 is a relatively rare vehicle with only 5703 produced over a four year period (approximately 2300 imported to North America), IMO their numbers on BaT have tended to dilute their exclusivity and beauty. Obviously supply and demand are at play as well.

    Comments would be appreciated-
    Healthy New Year to all

Every thing from real estate to automobiles have cooled.

exclusive cars wax and wane over time. I have always loved the Ferrari 512 and have followed their trading values. It is like a roller coaster.

If like the past, Z8 values will continue to rise and fall. The biggest payoff is owning and driving and truly special car.

When you look at board discussions on value from ten years ago, it's the same discussion. Except the values are 50% of the current values. I think the long term trend will continue, although we are in for a dip in asset prices in general.

Agreed, it's a tidal issue, all boats rise and fall together, but as the Fed continues to devalue the dollar you will over the long hall always be able enjoy the illusion of greater value.

Milton Freidman couldn't have said it any better.

    Unfortunately.

BAT sales are all over the board. The prices on these cars are fluctuating alot. The one i bought was a no sale last summer at $182 and that was a market bid -- that was what it was worth on that day.

Thank you for your comments. I have never purchased a collector car for it’s investment potential. Having been fortunate to have owned Ferrari Dinos, a 330 GTC, four E-Types, early 911s, etc, I consider the Z8 a remarkable vehicle. It is amazing that it was even designed and built.

Cars are definitely not the best investment option generally speaking - the bid offer spread is huge and maintenance is not cheap. I almost bought a collector quality Z8 (pristine, 5k miles, coffee table book etc) 4-5 yrs ago for $185k so even with the recent drop in prices they are holding up reasonably well. Ultimately I decided not to buy it since I like to drive my weekend cars often which is why I ended up buying a high mileage one. Larry, I owned a Dino too from 2000-03, a 1972 blue / tan 246GT. Still regret selling it. The Z8 will always be a special car.

    Hi Mark,
I owned a 1972 Dino coupe-Dino blue with blue interior from 1990 to 1994. I sold it to buy a national winning 1973 Silver/navy chairs and flares Spider which I regretfully sold in 2008. A Greek collector made me an offer that was impossible to resist. I still find the coupe to be the more attractive Dino.Interestingly there were about 4000 Dinos built (coupes and Spiders). IMO 5703 Z8s (including Alpinas) puts them in the exclusive category as well. Enjoy your E52.
