    Color Premium

Color (exterior and interior) as we all know is very subjective. On Tuesday my silver/black 6000 mile Z8 will arrive. While these colors are my favorite for the Z8, the market seems to put a premium on other colors. Topaz for example appears to bring a huge premium i.e. 50% premium. I have followed the collector car market for many years and can’t remember these premiums for colors. For sure a red Ferrari will likely cost more than a pale yellow example but likely not close to the situation described above.
    Any thoughts

Rare (low production) colors always seem to bring in more money, all other things being equal. Of course there are some colors that are rare but so hideous that the value is hindered by the color.

My personal experience is with classics from Ferrari, Aston Martin, Mercedes, Porsche and BMW.

I agree with that statement but I can’t remember seeing this level of premium.

A 12k mile Topaz over Crema Z8 sold on BAT two days ago for $345k plus $5k buyers premium. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2002-bmw-z8-49/ In five days, a BAT auction of a 12k mile Titanium over Black Z8 will hammer closed. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2002-bmw-z8-50/ I presume both cars are in reasonably similar, near pristine condition. This should provide as good a comparison regarding color price premium as you will find.

Well, the 12000 mile silver/black car sold for 226K with buyer’s premium. As we know a 12000 mile Topaz/crema car sold recently for 350K. If my math is correct that is a 55% premium for the Topaz car. That is a very significant difference! While I wouldn’t pay that premium for a Topaz car, “the market has spoken!”

Now the market gets to speak about a 12k mile black over crema car. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2001-bmw-z8-69/ Looks like it needs a thorough detailing and paint correction, offset to the plus side by the fact that it is a one-owner car.

This car is located about 15 miles from my home in New Jersey. I am surprised I have never stumbled across it before.

I am absolutely amazed that the seller would not have done a complete detail and full paint correction (and ceramic) before putting the car on BaT. It really looks “rough” when most likely $4-5K could have made it look stunning. Could be a big difference in the final selling price considering the very picky and detail focused (deservingly so) BaT crowd.

I agree, very short-sighted on the part of the seller.

I am not sure if the market has spoken clearly :-)

Look at the 3 most recent Topaz/Crema sold on BAT: 2001, 31K miles sold for 405K; 2002, 26K miles sold for 351K; and 2002, 12K miles sold for 345K. Can we say that older and higher milage Topaz/Crema's fetch more $$? It is fair to say that there is a premium on Topaz/Crema, but by how much, who knows. I really think it comes down to who's on the market looking to buy, how fat their wallet is, and how badly do they want this particular color combo.
