    Arrow BAT Thread

Well, with an not-lovingly-cared for Alpina selling two days ago, it might be interesting where this nicely maintained car ends up.

    Sold for 145,000

Well prepared and presented sale, but to me the Black on Black is rather a dull combo for these cars.

Our friend Klaus's gorgeous and immaculately maintained sold for an incredible reasonable 135,000.

This price for a 2001 on BAT looks low

Any feel for why this sold for such a low price? https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...ing_endedSandy

Several niggling issues, like the hacked up dash, but the odometer issues had to hurt it.

Seems it's about in line with the prices that BaT achieves for our cars.

I'd say this looks like an imperfect driver that needs TLC, so it's a low but still pretty fair price. We're getting to the time when condition and care are really starting to separate the prices. A museum quality car is still in the 200++ range, and as we see at Monterey super perfect ones can reach the 400's now.

Did anyone read the description in which it says, “A service conducted approximately 200 miles ago and totaling just over $9,600 included installing a new water pump, trunk struts, rearview mirror, chain cover gasket, engine oil, pollen filter, hoses, and belts”. How on earth does a service consisting of this cost over $9,000??? An entire engine rebuild on an s62 from the block up would cost around $10k. You guys be careful out there. There is no need to be paying Ferrari labor on your Z8.

Wow! As someone who regularly enjoys reading the BAT commentaries, I can honestly say I have never seen such a nasty exchange. I would think the moderator would have shut it down. I will say that the FoxJohnFox character has regularly contributed negative half-truths about the Z8 while the auctions were live, which is a real no-no. He probably needed to be called out, but perhaps not quite so viciously.

I agree. John Fox has an axe to grind. He has negative commentary on pretty much every Z8 auction.

I have gone around with him a couple times. His basic argument is that a Z8 should be valued like a used Corvette, meaning significantly depreciated.

John also forgets that different consumers have a different interests and passions.....BMW owners and enthusiasts typically love Z8’s....maybe a Corvette owner loves something else...but for him to trash Z8’s and speak of it like a “market view” is not right

  15. #15
I agree this was totally out of control. I love BaT, but this was disappointing. Surprised folks watching the auction did not report the posts (or maybe some did and the mods were already on Christmas break). I have seen less aggressive and meanspirited posts get removed. Not sure if BaT is a good venue to sell Z8’s or Alpinas. Never seen one go for a good price. Seems to be at times excellent for Porsches though!

Interesting to see one with somewhat higher mileage on the block. One owner and black/black may offset the mileage effect to a point. What is your high bid estimate?

You'll be delighted at the change, but I'd add the heavier duty H&R swaybars into that mix.

I am looking at them right now on ebay......seems they are still readily available.I wanted to put an Alpina suspension on mine but at 11k USD I might just give it a miss !The swaybars are a far more realistic 500 USD.

  30. #30
Bill - we both missed it big time! $126,000 (+$5K) was a steal for this black beauty that seemed to have been taken care very well and lovingly (with the exception of having the PP). I was actually surprised that the reserve was met in the low $120Ks when the seller announced it. Well. someone got a great driver at a very good price! Hopefully we will see the person here soon!

I don't know for sure, but I think the buyer might be a dealer. He has bought several cars on BaT.

Ten again, that doesn't mean he won't fall in love with the Z8.

Skip- Like you, I thought it would go for considerably more than it did. However, it appears the seller enjoyed the car to the fullest during his 17 years of ownership, and apparently now has health issues that made it necessary to move the car along. He had the pleasure of driving a Z8 for all that time essentially for free (other than maintenance), so the car owed him nothing. My guess is he just didn't feel the need to hold out for top dollar.

I am currently searching for a few cars and was wondering about BaT - cars seem to sell below market there a lot - any idea why?

  35. #35
I think because the market across the board is signaling a weakening economy and less certainty. Things are selling on BaT at what the market will bear, where on other sites the sellers desired prices are making things sit on the shelf a very long time.

I used to be able to help connect buyers and sellers a lot here, but today there just aren't any buyers at the prices sellers are looking to achieve. I haven't successfully sold a Z8 in many months, where as I used to sell two to three a month.

Another Z8 on BaT as of today. Sliver Red/Black. Interesting that wwhen the seller was asked about the "strut tower fix" he responded the car di not have it, but the pictures clearly show the Performance Package that has been installed. Obviously the seller is not form these pages...

The silver/red car sold for $191,000 including buyers premium. Multiple people were also bidding into the $180k+ range. If anyone was paying attention to the comments, the seller was very communicative, something that I consider a necessity if you want your car to do well on BAT.

Seems like there is now one almost every week... Would have been nice to see the one today to sell at a d3cent price, but glad it had a decent reserve and remained unsold as opposed to having been sold at a low price. Let’s where this new entry goes! Would be great if it sold $180K +.

    Seems
It’s likethere has been one every week for the last few weeks and if sold, they are not catching premium pricing. Maybe not the best place to sell for top price? On the other hand, if the reserve is not too high, it is a quick way to sell assuming all the boxes check.

Wow, I’m surprised that another one would be listed on BAT so fast. He can’t be that desperate to sell but he certainly was watching the site and preparing for the performance package questions. Maybe BAT is counting the looks at the cars and seeing a lot of attention raised by Z8 listings.

SOLD - $149,000 + 5% buyers premium. Surprised at the relatively low reserve, but maybe this is current market (soft) correct. Or is it just that BaT is not 5he best pkCe to sell Z8’s at this time.

The BaT buyer's premium maxes out at $5,000. Having said that, getting the car across the border sounds like another 2.5% tax. That may have held back some buyers.

All in all, seems like a pretty good buy, for the buyer that is.

I see that as well, but somehow typical on BaT on many othrt cars as well. Typically it seemd from a few same posters who always chime in with their “wisdom”. Now at the same time there is also a lot of love. A new Z8 popped up again yesterday (6/10) on the site so let’s see how this one goes for the seller. There just seems to be too many Z8s being offered for sale there and I would think that the buyer base there is somewhat limited as I meet all the time car enthusiasts mostly Porsche owners) do not know about BaT.

Is it just me or is anyone else noticing the pricing on BAT's for most cars is being pushed lower. I was at an Austin Healey meet last weekend, and a lot of the people there are nervous posting on BAT, because BAT forces a low reserve on the car to sell...which pushes price down. Has anyone had experience with reserve discussions on BAT? If yes how does it work?Sanyd

  62. #62
Their business model is based on making sales, so they want to ensure that sales happen, which in turn tends to push reserves down in order to ensure sales are made.

My greatest concern is that their business model, which is based on a sale having to be made in a certain time, will in the end undermine the entire classic marketplace.

But I would say Barrett Jackson has been using that business model it for decades. They just combine it with on-site pressure and alcohol to push things higher. Then they keep a large portion (20%) for themselves.

heavily modified for performance. Although, not to the level of GM's car

You have to wonder if their business model will stand up over time. It was fun to follow BAT when it was finding cars, and the auctions were fun at first too. Now you can almost predict the comments on a number of cars. And right now they are running 245 auctions. It takes a good while to look through them unless you are searching for only one particular make and model.

Yes...it is now becoming more and more of a Used Car site....lots of just used cars getting into the auction so BAT can make their commission versus collector cars...dealers are getting into the action too. Not sure how long this will last before collector car enthusiast’s catch on. Sandy

I believe Hemmings recently announced that they were entering the specialty car online auction business. Sounds similar to BAT, the cars on offer are curated by Hemmings.

This is my worry, these auction sites will all hustle the market lower just to make their numbers and get their commissions. They don't really care what the cars sell for so long as they keep them rolling through the doors, and ultimately this is going to undermine values.

Too much product going through too many competing auction sites all needing to make their numbers is going to undercut values drastically over the next few years. I'd suggest not holding on to too many cars as assets, just keep the ones you actually want to use and enjoy.
