Unfortunately I probably won't be receiving it for another 1-2 weeks. Transporters are slammed and having Mecum in Dallas this week and Barrett-Jackson in Houston next week is getting in the way of the Z8 traveling from TX to CA as soon as I'd like. But at least there won't be any seat wear in the car! Seller has been great, providing answers to my questions and detailing out what comes with the car (beyond what was mentioned during the BaT listing).

Can't blame anyone for selling. I'm seeing the price of a couple of my cars triple in value...seems like inflation is here, people getting out of cash and buying assets.

Yes, alas: If all goes well, I will be bereft of Z8s by this evening.

  11. #311
Satch, I think you are jumping the gun a bit- your auction doesn't close until tomorrow evening. That said, good luck with the sale, and please don't hesitate to visit here in the future as a bereft former owner....

Congrats to Satch. $230K seems like a pretty good result.

  13. #313
Satch - Congratulations on the sale! Sorry to see that you are now Z8less, but hopefully one day you will have the keys in your hand again and hopefully you will stay active here sharing your vast knowledge of the Z8 as well as BMW in general. It would be fantastic if you could share with us the process with BaT from the initial discussions, tweaking the text template for the post, setting the reserve, and getting Buffy finally launched on BaT. I know I am not asking much... but this would be a great read.

Not sure how this highly respected member’s BaT auction has gone without a mention here. What a special, well tweaked, and enhanced car! GLWA!!! Less than 24 hours to go.

Auction ended earlier today and with moderate last minute activity today. Ended and sold for $221,000. I expected between $220,000 to $225,000 based on recent other auctions and looks like I was pretty close. Many of you commented during the auction on BaT and I appreciate everyone's support. BaT wanted to list the reserve a lot lower than what they should and I had to negotiate with them a bit to set the reserve fairly high. Not sure if this is generally how they do things as I am sure it is not good for them when a car goes unsold so their motivation is different than mine as I am / was not a desperate "have to sell" seller. Overall, good experience.

And they keep coming! This one looks like it could be another high price one. Great color combo, photography, PP, and all the extras and more. There has been 28 previous listings in 2021 and only two did not meet the reserve.

Black/Crema Z8 on sale now on BaT https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2002-bmw-z8-42/ has an interesting radio installation with a major modification to the center console. Personally I do not care for the look or finish or the design with relocated control knobs to the cubby hole next to the handbrake. I was very surprised that no one had commented about it earlier (before my post). The car also has many cosmetic issues that can pretty easily be corrected - one would think they would have been taken care of before the auction.

The relocation of control knobs to the cubbies looks almost factory, so no concerns there. But the radio installation looks poorly done.

It sold for $175,000 which must have been due to the modification and the cosmetic issues that had not been addressed. Low for a Black/Crema with 30K miles.

It's probably 5k in parts to get that center console back to original condition. And I think the parts are available. From the later comments on the listing it sounds like the custom indent is supposed to hold an apple ipad mini, which would look flush inside the indent. Would have made a big difference if someone knew that at the time the pictures were done and stuck the ipad on there, or clearly explained the setup.

I am very puzzled with the entire Z8 market and BAT. I see listings outside of BAT that barely get any attention with prices that are, at least, rational for the current market. Then there is BAT with really unusual outcomes. Not sure what's going on. I can only call it the BAT effect. Not ready to call it a Ponzi scheme, but it is certainly strange. Come to think of it, the entire financial market is acting strange. Who would have guessed that people would line up to pay $40K for a bitcoin, essentially a string of bits based on what amounts to do a distributed spreadsheet.

  42. #342
It is certainly a fascinating mystery, I feel like we're watching a new phenomenon being born where BaT in particular is becoming something of a 'high end' store, like Bergdorf-Goodman in NY or Harrods in London, where buyers are happy to pay a premium for the curation and visibility of the store/purchase.

People will pay for the perception of quality, Volkswagen couldn't sell the exceptionally well reviewed Phaeton for 75k, so VAG the put a different body and badge on it, and couldn't produce it fast enough as the 175k Bentley Continental.

Andrew, you are right. This site should have been the goto market for Z8, with what amounts to the most comprehensive coverage of topics related to Z8 and a lot of ownership history and lineage. I am sure in the long run it will.

    Andrew,
I'm inclined to believe the under bidder's excuse regarding connection issues.
I had them while bidding on Buffy while on a high speed fiber connection. I was dropped twice and had to scramble to get back in.
The table was set for $500k.

Thanks for the nice post on BaT Andrew. The auction seems to be moving right along. I'm really enjoying the BaT process as I've been interacting with people online for many years now so responding to requests for photos and additional information is old hat. I enjoy the transparency of BaT. Although I always encourage anyone to come look at a vehicle in person or have a professional inspection done, I love getting notes back from thrilled buyers telling me the car I sold them far exceeded their expectations. I believe this is that kind of car. I really wish there had been time to do the soft top headliner, but I believe it's been adequately photographed so a buyer will know exactly what they are dealing with. I'll also be happy to share any research I have done on the replacement kit and that it's not an onerously expensive repair. Beyond that it's a very complete and ready to go anywhere car.

I know we'll all be watching this one. I've already seen a bunch of you commenting...

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2002-bmw-z8-65/

1 of 8 Topaz // Red-Black and this one's only got 5,000 miles on the odometer.

A Topaz/Crema with 31K miles went for $405,000 back in February. Have to think this one will easily exceed that.

Topaz is flashy. Red is flashy. I'm not in the camp that thinks the combination is a good one. So what if it's 1 of 8 in that color combo...what's the point if you don't absolutely love it.

I'll come out and say it - as the (previous) owner of a Topaz Blue & Crema I never really came to love the flatness of the Topaz paint. I always felt it should have a lot more metal flake in it, more like the lovely Shelby Daytona/Cobras, to eventuate the curves and lines of the car. That said, I do think that the red helps give this one some sparkle, and from a collectability point of view its a stunning 5k mile car. so it gets a nod for that too. However, all that said, silver is still the best color IMHO.

Great result. Out of curiosity I calculated the annual rate of return assuming the owner bought it new 20 yrs ago. Surprisingly it was only 6.2%. Of course it would be much lower when you factor in the cost of maintenance and insurance. It goes to show that collector cars are not a great investment generally speaking compared to stocks etc. (the last 9 months notwithstanding). So, stop worrying about mileage and drive your car!

Interesting analysis. I guess they produced too many Z8s for them to skyrocket in prices.

It goes to show that collector cars are not a great investment generally speaking compared to stocks etc. (the last 9 months notwithstanding). So, stop worrying about mileage and drive your car!

:-) As philatelic investors would tell you, mistakes can be worth a lot of money.

This Topaz/Crema just cane up on BaT today. Such a great color combination! Has the Performance Package and many of the common little issues taken care of during routine maintenance reading through the Carfax. No book…

    I like this blue better.

    2000 Red over black
heavily modified for performance. Although, not to the level of GM's car

    Hello all,

I have been away for a bit and not active here in quite some time but still am the proud owner of a 2002 Topaz/crema. I currently keep my car in climate controlled storage and it sees less than 100 miles per year.

I noted that the Topaz/red car was for sale, as I enjoy monitoring sales of various cars on a pretty cool website that I stumbled upon a few years back.
    https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/z8/

As it turns out the original owner of this car lived next door to me and at one point we got the cars together for a few snaps that I had previously posted here. What is the chance of these 2 relatively rare cars residing next door to one another???

Thought that I would share them once again in light of the recent sale and discussions.
BTW my neighbor sold the car about 6 years ago for 250k.

I must say that the Topaz/red certainly catches ones eye, and the red did impart a bit of edge to overall demeanor of the car, but I still prefer the stately elegance of the Topaz/crema. IMHO.

    Enjoy!
