This one could break the $200K barrier again as it’s already at $175,000 with four days to go. That would be great to see - maybe even get to Molly territory!

EDIT: Just about an hour after I posted it’s jumped to $190,000 after a few bids between three or so people. This could get very interesting!

EDIT 2: with 20 hours to go it’s up-to $205,000. Nice! Need to watch the live action tomorrow afternoon at the end! They typically are fun to watch and read as the comments come by.

It would be interesting if for no other reason than it would show the high price on Molly's car was not solely due to the fact it was a red car.

Sold for $162K only 2 weeks after one with 6,000 miles sold for $256K. The current cost of driving one mile is apparently now $5.

I can only imagine what this Topaz one is going to go for. It's already at $190K: https://bringatrailer.com/bmw/z8/?q=bmw%20z8

We've got a barn burner going on for the Topaz in the last (endless) two minutes at BAT. Current bid is $267K...

    … and we're done at $270,000 ($275K with buyer's premium). I think a sub 10,000 mile Stratus or Topaz can pull $300K.

Sold for $235K + $5k buyer's premium. Seems like a pretty good deal considering the 27K mile red/crema that went for $245k 3 months ago.

Next up is a 32K mile 2001 Silver/Black that is in need of a new soft top.

Yeah, you can pick up a silver/black on eBay with similar miles for $170k obo so it's unlikely this one will go for more than that. That said, I just realized that there's a 23K mile red/crema available on ebay right now for $225K obo.

edit: that price has been lowered to $212,000 obo ...

Looks like BaT has abandoned it's one Z8 at a time policy (if there ever was one) as there is now an Euro red/black as well. Another interesting detail is that it has LED conversion tail lights that I am sure will generate a lot of interesting conversation. 61K miles on the odometer.

This one could set a new price record. Pictures of the undercarriage look like the car just rolled off the assembly line. BAT presently has a Z8 for every pocketbook- a somewhat tatty red car with 61k miles and this black Alpina with delivery miles. The red car needs some love, but will make a nice driver for someone. Lots of patina. The Alpina will fill a spot in someone's collection, never to be driven.

So the tatty red over black European car sold yesterday for $160,000 plus $5,000 BAT commission. The car had 61k miles, the dash was a mess, the interior plastic bits had various buttons and LED lights installed, no performance package, rims were curbed, none of the many accessories were in evidence other than the hardtop, taillights were converted to LED. The car's bones were seemingly good, it appeared to be a car that someone used as it was intended; driven and enjoyed but not lovingly cared for. Three days earlier on BAT, a silver over black car sold for $10k less, with half the miles, most of the bits and bobs were present, and the car seemed to be in generally excellent condition. How much of a premium does red, blue, or stratus command these days?

I was surprised too. I get it that some colors fetch higher numbers but this example needed a lot to make it a first rate car. I am more surprised by the black ROW car that sold on May 17th. That car was in very good condition with nearly 2/3rds less miles.

I don't think there is a bad color choice. I would choose condition over color if actively buying.

As with many other assets, there is considerable volatility in the market. I agree that there is no bad color choice and I too would take a car that is complete and sorted over one that needs works. Miles driven are harder to price. The relationship does not seem to be linear, i.e., below 10K miles seems to fetch higher dollars. The price for cars above 20K seems to mostly level off or decrease at a lower slope. Who knows ....

    UPDATE:
7K mile Black/Red went for $219,000. Slightly less than I expected.

The Alpina was bid to $352,500 but reserve was not met.

    Next up is a 32K mile 2003 Silver/Red Dinan S2

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2003-bmw-z8-8/

Someone needs to call Dinan and tell them they need to start making all those mods again. Bidding is already up to $180k.

edit: 4 days have passed and it looks like the bidding has stalled at $180k due to bidders and seller bickering about pre-sale inspections. Welp, that changed in the last hour. Sold for $207,507. Seems pretty reasonable.

    26k-Mile 2001 BMW Z8 for sale on BaT Auctions - ending July 7 (Lot #50,823) | Bring a Trailer

This 2001 BMW Z8 is finished in red over black leather and powered by a 4.9-liter V8 paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Additional equipment includes a removable hard top, a black soft top, staggered-width 18″ forged wheels, neon turn signals and taillights, and heated power-adjustable seats. The car was sold new by BMW of Darien, Connecticut, and later spent time in New York and South Carolina before the selling dealer’s acquisition in February 2021. Subsequent work included refinishing the front bumper cover as well as replacement of the headlight assemblies, windshield, coolant temperature sensor, and thermostat. This Z8 has 26k miles and is offered in Connecticut with its original sales invoice, manufacturer’s literature, a tool kit, car and top covers, a hardtop stand, service records, a clean Carfax report, and a clean South Carolina title.

Z8 du jour on Bat! That is a gorgeous one! Somewhat surprising at the pace the Z8's are being presented on BaT. It seems that there is always one in the hopper to be posted as soon as one sells. Love reading the comments and sometimes throw one in just for fun as well. The best part is watching the end of the auction live as the bids come in.

    GLWA !!!

I am less than a novice photographer but when it comes to car photography, I truly believe it really enhances the car's presence when the front wheel is turned in when photographed from the front and turned out when photographed from the rear.

One thing I noticed on BaT is a lot of photographers (probably the sellers themselves) like to load the gallery up with pics taken with the camera on the ground, or close to it. IMO, that is OK if normal eye level pictures are also included, but when it is mostly ground level pics, I think they are shortchanging their listing.

I mean, I rarely approach a car only to lay on the ground to take it all in.

Just my very novice opinion (I know we are in the company of an expert).

Hi all - It is time to part with my Z8 after serving as its caretaker since 2004. Here is the BaT listing:

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2001-bmw-z8-41/

I have used and cared for it as such a fine car deserves, and I hope it ends up at a good home for its next 20 years.

Tyler - sorry to hear that! GLWA!!! What do you have in the plans for future or/and what is in your garage? Also, would love to learn about your experience of working with BaT to work though the listing and the process of agreeing on the reserve amount.

Hi Skip - Thanks! My garage is an eclectic mix of BMW E46 M3, Lancia Delta Integrale, Citroen SM and Alfa stepnose. I bought the Z8 the day my son was born and almost missed that important event, so I plan to get something for he and I to work on together, maybe a 3rd gen Subie STi or something else tunable and relatively modern for a 17 year-old.

The BaT listing process is straightforward, but not at all transparent on timing. I submitted the Z8 in early May and once accepted, they estimated 2-3 weeks. It's been a lot longer than that, but they do try and list only one Z8 at a time and there were obviously several ahead of mine. There was very little back and forth on reserve as their initial proposal was close to where I was thinking. Not surprising giving the amount of data they collect. What do you think of the photos? I used the BaT photo service and while very convenient and inexpensive, they are not as nice as I'd hoped.

I think your pictures are good. They do what is needed to share the condition of the car.

Not every auction needs art house pictures to get the best results. Your car speaks for it self. Great condition car will do well. I hope you don't miss it too much.

Tyler, your pictures are very nice. I hope you get top dollars for the car. Regarding BAT, I don't know why they run these multi-day auctions, when most of the action takes places in matter of minutes. I think 2 or 3 days should be sufficient to reach all interested parties.

The Z8 will always hold its value, but I feel that the recent rush on BAT to cash out is taking its toll on the pricing. There seems to be some buyer fatigue.

Just an observation; A lot of the really big money auctions run 10 or 14 days.

I am guessing they believe it gets more eyeballs on the car, tho those of us who live in car world know most buyers are very tuned into what is happening of BaT. We now know Malcolm Gladwell and Jay Leno check in regularly. I am sure less famous but perfectly capable buyers are on regularly which supports your point of keeping them shorter.

It was a bit more fun there when there were only 35-40 auctions running at one time. I have noticed since they went big, many of my favorite commentators have disappeared.

After two mid-20k miles silver/blacks both went for $200K+ we have the holy grail of color combos with low miles here to likely shatter the $300K barrier.

    Double Treat

Hmm… A second Z8 on BaT at the same time. This one a Silver/Black with 30K miles. Maybe that believe that these two have a separate audience or buyer base, One being more of a collector car and the second one a driver. Hope Z8 fatigue does not set in as the past few sales have brought nice results for the sellers.

It's also the least visually exciting, so if asked to value by color, it's the one I'd give the lowest value to, but that's just because I'm a photographer, and black on black is so darn hard to photograph!

There has been a non stop stream of Z8s selling on BAT for a while now. I hope most of these cars are landing in the hands of true enthusiasts who would care for these cars and enjoy them for the long run. Otherwise, the slightest downturn in market and we'll see a rush to sell these ...

Great to see Silver/Black "Plain Jane" Z8 get $210 (with fee)! Only 6,000 miles on the odometer obviously was the key driver for the price, but still awesome!

The red one on there now is going to interesting with the custom interior designs. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2001-bmw-z8-48/

3 of the previous 4 auctions were "plain jane" silver/black with 25-30k miles and they all topped $200k. The buyer of this 6k mile one got a deal.

You are quite right! Everything has been pretty strong lately. Here are the last 12 sales:

Five hours left on the Red/Crema and we have four bidders at or above $190k.

    Sold for $212k (including $5k buyer's premium)

That's not the way it works...hammer price when auction ends DOES NOT include the BaT fee. The BaT fee is charged directly to the buyer and the buyer and seller settle the hammer price.

So for this Z8, final cost to buyer was $212k + $5k BaT fee = $217k.

    From BaT site:

    • Buyers pay a 5% fee on top of the final sale price to BaT, with a minimum of $250, and capped at $5,000.

Thanks. I know how it works. I saw the $207k bid and missed your $212k bid above it. Congrats on your purchase. Hope you'll post pix after you change the seats.

The seller is already arranging for changing the seats, including headrests, back to all Crema before it gets on a truck to me. I'll post a pic of it alongside my 507 after the Z8 arrives.

If you have access to Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee on Netflix, find episode with Christoph Waltz. My 507 was used for that episode.
