I think heís right. Cars will go the way of horses... eventually. Entertainment for those who can afford it.

He says exactly what I've been feeling over the last few years. I'm not sure it'll be as rapid as 20 years, there's a huge amount of infrastructure to be put in place to embrace all of this, but in 40 years I think that's exactly the way it'll be.

I agree with Andrew: the infrastructure requirement and cost will be a challenge politically and financially. I assume the technology, as usual, will be far ahead of the political process.

Oddly enough I've been working on a book about Concorde, and discovered that it was actually a dictum of Washington that the US plane companies were forbidden to develop supersonic passenger planes. Politics suck!

    All,
Time will tell what really happens. Some of the big cities around the world will definitely impose controls that will drive EVs. However, other than amazingly, Chevrolet, no one has really developed a production car that can go more than 200 miles and be charged very fast.
Having worked in the Oil Refinery Engineering and Construction business all of my career, I see the Internal Combustion Engine around for a while. In North America the long distances, and our desire to go away from civilization (middle of nowhere) will prevent us to go fully electric. In developing countries, they still don't have electricity in most of the living areas for basic needs, so charging stations will probably be slow to develop.
What we are also seeing in our business is a real fight for Lithium (mining and chemical plants) for battery production, and the Chinese are diligently trying to control most of the market for Lithium, and eventually for battery production. Good thing for the rest of us is that some of the big Lithium deposits are in Australia and Chile, both of which will not allow others to just take over (no matter how large the bribes are) their Lithium. My company, and many others involved in the refining business are doing a major study to look at all possibilities and bottlenecks. Definitely we will see a change in the first half of this century, but it is very likely that we will be driving our cars for a while longer.
