Thread: New Canvas Top

    New Canvas Top

I have an appointment later this week to have a new oem canvas top installed on my car. The old one had broken strings that resulted in a hole being chafed in the canvas (prior to my ownership). My question to the group, has anyone had this done, and are there any "watch outs" I should make the installer aware of? Thanks for any insights.

Are you having a BMW dealer do the install? If not, is the top OEM?

Is that the top from the Netherlands Bill, if so can you say something about the quality?

The top was represented as OEM, purchased from a vendor in the Netherlands. To my untrained eye, the top appears to be of the same fabric as the one on the car, the plastic window has a tiny BMW roundel embossed into it so I am trusting it to be OEM. The installer is a local upholstery/convertible top guy who works on high end cars and has a very good reputation. Ton, I will keep you informed as to the opinion rendered by the installer of the top as to fit, etc once the installation is complete.

I had my canvas replaced last year. The canvas was not OEM and was modified to do away with the strings that are so problematic, it came from a German supplier and canít be distinguished from the OEM once on the car. The canvas was installed in Switzerland by a shop that does all the upholstery work for BMW in the region. He ended up doing it impeccably but told me it was the most difficult he had ever done. Initially the canvas was extremely tight and the top would not close without pulling it down very hard by hand. The shop advised to get it wet and keep it closed for as long as I could which was fine as I got the work done in the off season. Over time and after getting it wet several times, it came out perfect, stretched as it should and looks perfectly tight.

Well, after a few delays the top was finally installed. It looks fantastic, couldn't be happier with the fit and finish. The installer did a great job, but did indicate the installation was one of the more difficult ones he had ever undertaken, involving an online crash course in BMW top strings. The top itself is definitely BMW OEM, with the logo imprinted in the plastic window. So Ton, two thumbs up for the vendor. The installer did mention that had he procured the top himself, he uses the non-oem supplier GAHH which he has had good experience with.

When I purchased the top some months back, the seller indicated that he had a limited number of tops available to him at the time. Hopefully he can access more, as he was selling them at a very good price. Incidentally, I kept the window from my old top as a spare "just in case", as it was in good condition. Apparently a new one is $450.00.

I purchased from the same guy last week. It is the one with the roundel on the plastic window. It arrived yesterday and it is in the customs now. Hopefully it will be delivered on Tuesday. I am glad you are happy with the top Bill.

Yes, unfortunately my headliner has also become somewhat wrinkled with age. Should have thought to replace it at the same time!

This appears to be the same top from the same vendor. Now $400 cheaper.

i bought one of his rear windows. Smooth transaction. There are no markings on either the window or the packaging indicating BMW.

Not thinking it is the wrong part, but wondering about the OEM Claim. Guess it means he is getting it from the OEM supplier?

Anyone else thinking of buying one to stow away for that day in the future?

Yes, I spoke to him and he gets the soft top and window from the OEM supplier. The supplier manufactures now and than an extra batch of products for the vendor.
