not quite, Ton, more like what you would see at a car show - so these were quite large. Maybe 4x8, and they hung down long side vertical with the logo horizontal in the middle... next time I am there, I will take a picture.

Hi Andrew, Just to add my 2 cents house design recently built and managed by yours truly here and garage ready for the one and only RHD Z8. Hopefully the house photo is attached.

I have been using the car lift in our new garage extensively! Not sure if you have the height, but if you do, you must get one of these! So easy to do mundane things like clean the inside of the wheels in addition to all the mechanical things one would want to do.

Hopefully you and the family can make it up to Vancouver and we can have you over.

    Good luck with the process!

    Hi Patrick,

We we were told 18 months for the build from May 2018, so sometime in late 2019/early 2020 we move into our dream house. The ceiling in the garage is 12 feet high, and I plan for a lift next to the workshop.

The Pacific Northwest especially Seattle and Vancouver are some of our favorite places to visit, and weíll definitely do a better job of planning next time to stop by your place.

Really enjoyed this tread. My wife (Susan) and I have decided to build a house near the hill country in Texas (Northwest of Houston), and while the design will be more San Antonio style, she told me to find a way to build a 6 car garage that fits with the architectural style of the house, so I very much enjoyed reading about the garage pointers and to see the beautiful houses. Our present house in Houston is a single story with high ceilings throughout the house and luckily the builder included high ceilings in the garages (2 car and a single car). I installed a lift in the single car garage and it works great. We are just starting the process, and I am hoping that Texas will be much easier than California to get a permit when we get to that stage.

Congratulations Manuel on your plans to build a new home! We thoroughly enjoyed designing the home to our specifications. Given the long wait through the design review and permitting processes, I have also enjoyed every minor building milestone.

I am at the site with my camera almost daily with the intent to create a photo essay of the build. I was advised to make a video too after framing to document the location of utilities that will eventually be hiding behind sheet rock.

Seems like forever since I have been on the site. My world has been topsy-turvy for some time. How is the new home and garage coming? Still on target for late 2019, early 2020 completion? Exhausted from making choices or has it all gone smoothly so far?

Hi Charles, sorry to read about some challenges that I hope have now passed. Your posts of wit and wisdom have been missed!

The house and garage continue to progress towards completion in the timeframe that you mentioned. Our current home is very close to the new one, so my routine visits keep the dialog current and expectations clear. This practice of connecting with the builder and his crew also helps to keep decision making less overwhelming thus far. My wife and I are still best friends too because we are aligned on most house-related topics.

At this point, you can walk through the framed house and envision what it will feel like when done. I am enjoying the experience but ready for it to end. Below is a picture of the garage (one of two bays) and workshop.

    Stay tuned for future updates...

Very Nice. The good news is you are absolutely going to love it when it is done. The bad news is that you may just be at the beginning of the decision making. If you looked at some of the other builder's projects with this architect, liked how the details looked and the fixtures, etc...are still readily available from the builder's suppliers, you may already have a spec sheet. Not just floor materials and color, window and wall coverings (and colors and textures - even if white there are a lot of whites that all look different in every light on every wall), but also light fixtures, knobs, switch types and colors, plumbing fixtures (still love my Toto Drake WC), water heaters...the list keeps going. Figure out if anything heavy will be mounted and make sure the framing works, and recesses are framed out, and the electrical is hidden. I am pretty picky about everything (I even insisted on being with the paint sub and contractor as they textured samples on the walls so it would not be too heavy), but your architect may have spec'd all this, and it may be available. I had a situation where I researched and spec'd a certain tankless water heater, and a different one show up at the site. The builder said he could not get the one I spec'd from his supplier. Fortunately I did some more scramble research and determined the substitute was fine to avoid a fight. But that is just one example of the surprises. The only thing I could always count on was when I bought the item, knew how it needed to be installed and would work, and had it delivered. Mine was done in 2010, so my bad memories have faded as I continue to love it, but it was tumultuous...and you have a whole house!

The hardest part was using a designer who had ideas on what we wanted without asking us. He was quickly released after I reminded him about who would actually live in the house once completed. Here in Northern California we're having difficulty too getting in front of HVAC folks for the geothermal heat pump system that will heat/cool the house and supply hot water. My friends in Europe have this system, but it is new to our area. Our architect and contractor has been building homes since the 1970's and some of his crew have been with him for over 20 years and now their sons have joined. Lot of expertise in the build with lots of great guidance to facilitate decision making. That said, your points are well taken and I will be a "one and done" new home owner after this build.

Wow!!! I will be standing by my mailbox waiting for the unveiling party invitation! Looks great, Ed!Other than the images that have been shared here of cool garages, were you using anything in particular as inspiration for the inside? I am finally redoing my garage - which is a pretty plain but excellently built 4 car space including lift, and wanted some general ideas. Any links appreciated!PW

Thank you Patrick, and you are also welcome for a tour. Will you be in Monterey this year? For inspiration we have a minimalist modern home design that translates to the garage as well with behind wall pneumatic lines and sound system wiring.

Also... not sure about Monterey. I was hoping to as it is the Z8 20th anniversary of course, but it is looking 50-50 at this point. Will you be attending?

I recently test drove a Porsche 991.2 GT3 with MT and thatís on the list of cars I would consider next as is a McLaren 570. At this time, we are planning a day trip to Monterey during Car Week.

Itís a process called glulam. Essentially, a jig was set on the plywood floor of the garage. Using this jig, thin bendable strips of wood were then glued and screwed together forming the curved sections shown. The foreman overseeing this part of the build has been with our architect/builder for over 20 years and he found our home to be at another level of difficulty.

Here is the link to our architectís website if you want a feel for his work. http://herringandworley.com/

After 26 months, the end of the build is now in clear view. In reviewing this post from so long ago our final garage space includes:
    • 4 car spaces and workshop area
    • 12 foot ceiling for allowing a car lift
    • Side lift openers
    • large utility sink
    • LED lighting
    • duplex outlets all around
    • 240V outlet(s) for future electric cars
    • Plenty of extra side/back room for shelving, etc
    • Fire detection/protection system
    • Cable TV wiring
    • 4 speaker sound system linked to Yamaha Music Cast System
    • Cat 6 wiring
    • Great natural lighting

The floor will be finished with an epoxy coating. Stay tuned for final pictures.

Wow, sounds great, Ed! I assume you considered this and it is too late anyway, but I will say that one of the most useful aspects of my 'fancy garage' is the compressed air network - I use this all the time - but a portable compressor works too.

What are you using for a floor epoxy?

Hi Patrick! The compressed air lines were in play, but I ended up deciding to use a portable air tank when needed to free up floor space. Weíre planing on using an epoxy coat on the floor, just like the pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities at my employer. Durable and easy to clean!

Can't wait to see the new pics! There is always something you might have done different, but you have planned well and endured forever getting it built. You will absolutely love it. I have thoroughly enjoyed mine over the last 10 years and the only thing I have not used is the 240v...but there will be a day.

Makes sense re the portable compressor - I have one that I use around the house (to blow out irrigation lines, etc.) and then seat it in its place in the garage to tie into the network. You can get some quite good ones now that can handle the CFM required for the larger air guns - and the cost is very reasonable. Get the biggest you can manage in the space!Good luck with everything as you near completion!PW

I've spent hours on my knees looking for a small nut that I dropped. I put in a large(storage) Compressor, centrally located with a Hose Reel.

Thank you Charles, your voice has been missed on the forum! On the 240volt system, we just reserved a 300 mile range 2021 Ford Mustang Mach E, so we should see some use soon. You may appreciate that our home will be using a high efficiency geothermal heat pump for hot water generation that is common in Switzerland where many of my coworkers live.

Not the greatest pictures with all the scaffolding and construction dust but here are a couple sneak peeks:

Wow that looks awesome, Ed!! Bet you cannot wait. What is estimated completion date?

What brand of heat pump did you get? I think I mentioned to you that we have a home up the coast (my Z8 is happily sleeping up there as I write :-) ) and we have a geo system in there but I have found it to be less than 'efficient' - the compressor draws almost 6 kW when it is on! Feel free to email me so we don't clobber up a car forum with geothermal chatter :-)

You guys will have to come up and visit this summer!

Completion timing has some dependencies on busy subcontractors and on a utility company that is in bankruptcy court, but if you press me Iíll say May...

For our mild Bay Area climate, we ordered a 5 ton GeoCool water to water heat pump that arrives next week so I cannot offer a recommendation. To supplement the heat pump generating hot water for plumbing and heating we have a natural gas boiler that will come on at a preset water temp.

Would love to visit you in Vancouver, my sister is in nearby Ferndale WA too.

Sorry, that is a pic of the "little house" that I designed behind my mom's home in Houston. It is smaller than it looks. I drove the contractor crazy requiring the first floor ceiling to be lower than normal, so that the void up to the loft look extremely high. I remembered a post of how you said your ceilings were at a different height as you approached the walls. I am hoping that you will always love (as I do) the dramatic feeling you can achieve when you can build custom.

Very nice Charles! I remember that you have training as an architect, and the dramatic ceiling height is a nice touch.

    Hi Ed,

Hope you and the family are well! I am starting a cosmetic refurb of my garage finally and was wondering if you have any updated pics on your end. Also, anyone come across some cool garage pics? Our garage is a 4 car separate building with a two post lift - but pretty generic look and feel to it, so want to bring some warmth and a modern touch.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

    Hi Patrick,

Dare I say we are nearing the end of our project with all rooms competed except for the garage, which still needs to be painted. The key remaining milestones are: gas and electricity hook ups, connect the driveway to the street (there's a permit that's pending), which then allows for the delivery of appliances and plants. Building a home during a pandemic has definitely taken a toll on our timeline (and on me).

Our garage has all of the "Must Have" features shown near the top of this thread, and I am looking forward to enjoying it and the rest of the house soon!/? In our garage there are multiple 220V outlets for electric cars and welding. Low voltage wiring for cable, phone, internet was also part of our design. There's a deep utility sink for cleaning too.

    Best,

    Ed
PS: Special acknowledgement to Ted who inspired me with a Zoom tour of his home late last year

That is stunning, Ed! Looks like a place worthy of your vehicles!

I will take a pic of our garage and post - ideas welcome!

I likely mentioned before, but we got lucky when we bought this place - the garage has a compressed air network, two post lift, 220/110 connections galore... i am really struggling with decor though... I don't want the standard car logos and have just lived with teh empty space for a few years now.

    Hi Ed,
Exceptionally executed, great design!!. What was the roof cladding material used, zinc or aluminium? PK

Sounds like you have all the makings for a great garage space Patrick. I am not the best to give decor advice, but I would suggest upgrading lighting to LED units if you donít already have them. Looking forward to seeing your pictures.

Thank you Andrew, the credit goes to our architect/builder and his crew. When I showed our building plans to other contractors the most common response was ďNo way!Ē.

Thank you Peter, I am not sure of the cladding material composition, but given the weight I donít believe it is aluminum. Ed

    Hi,

As mentioned earlier, here is a pic of our garage - right now, the leading idea is to deck it out with awesome block prints (ie large picture split into rectangles) of pics of great drives around the world - e.g. pac coast highway or Stelvio Pass, etc. and other modern but woodsy elements (the house is on a few acres in the woods on the coast).

Any ideas from what others have done are welcome! Thanks!

Andrew, do you have any amazing pics of the pac coast highway - no car, just the road?

I don't have any that jump to my mind, but I'll absolutely go hunting for some.

This time of year isn't great because of the marine layer and high sun, but I'll absolutely do some over the autumn to get you one. I have an awesome new camera that is meant for making large prints, so that would be a beautiful excuse to get out and use it.

When I first came to California in 1988 for the motorcycle Grand Prix at Laguna Seca, I landed in LA, rented a convertible 328 and drove up Highway 1 to Carmel. It was that drive that made me decide to leave my fashion life in London, Paris & NY and move to California, so Highway 1 has a really special place in my heart, and I love the idea of photographing it as a road rather than as a background, which is what it has really been up till now. I'd been planning to do a story on the 395, but I think doing the 1 first is an awesome idea, thank you!

Thanks Andrew - glad my question got your creative juices flowing!

Pac Coast is an amazing road - a few years ago, I had the benefit of riding along it on an e-bike when those landslides had basically blocked it off from traffic. My daughters and I rode from Big Sur to where the landslide had taken place and back. No cars, just the road and a few other cyclists.

When I lived in SF, it was a regular destination of ours... truly special place so definitely let me know how you make out!

What is the new camera if you don't mind me asking?
