The speedometer in only KM is something I've only ever seen on my car. Is this an 'early car' thing or a 'European car' thing? (Mine is an early Canadian car)

    Some more info:

In the history of BMW AG, for the first time an automobile was manufactured on a different platform.

83 EU version Z8 were manufactured at M GMBH
18 US version Z8 were manufactured at M GMBH

Rest were manufactured at BMW AG. Those 101 Z8s manufactured at M GMBH are said to be "Special" since their VIN starts with "WBS".
Also for the first time in Alpina history all the Alpina Z8 Roadsters were manufactured with BMW AG VIN where Alpina VIN starts with "WAP".

All EU spec Z8s came with Km/h speedo.

I'll bet all of those 18 US WBS Z8's were press cars.

It would be great to see if we could find out the VIN's, but the main chassis assembly must have remained in the same place.

So there should be 18 with WBS Vin driving around in NA. Andrew as far as I understand they were assembled at M GMBH.

I'm going to guess not. Like Z8Mania mentioned, these are likely press cars that were used to reviews and shows prior to the start of sales.

Then again the Performance Center cars were supposedly going to be destroyed, and we've seen many of them released in to the market.

If that's the case they should either be 6000-60017, which were built in 1998-9, or it could be the preproduction fleet that came here in late 1998 for long distance road testing. Those cars were all shipped back to Germany to be taken apart for stress test examination.

Either way we don't have any of those early, early cars on our board, but I think the Topaz/Black one in the Spartenberg collection is 600010 incase anyone gets over there and remembers to check.

I tried when I picked up my X5 at the factory. I looked around to make sure there was no one near, stepped onto the platform to look at the VIN and out of nowhere came a worker who politely asked to "step away from the vehicle." I explained that I was a Z8 owner there to pick up a new car and wanted to read the VIN, but the stoic gentleman just said "sorry sir no one allowed on the platform."

Based on what I saw at the Z8 DE I think 60032 was the first USA customer car, but that's only a guess. We used to have 60034 here on the board, and I know it was one of the very first ones delivered.

Based on the dates, these strike me as test and manufacturing process optimizing vehicles. I'd bet they were all kept in the hands of BMW for analysis and archive.

I know 60013 (Black/Crema) was returned to Germany and fully restored at Mobile Tradition. It was offered for sale for $140k fully restored back in 09 and went to Russia.

Also 60014 came up on EBay back here - http://bmwz8.us/vbb/showthread.php?t=1506 and it does indeed have the WBS VIN.

Also I got some new info regarding Alpina AH62537, AH62538 and AH62540. According to the BMW AG updated archive data prepared on 03/2005 these 3 Alpina cars are "updated" versions. I don`t know what "updated" means but I will get more info from my friend Fatih.

These are the build specs for all 3 Alpina cars. For now he only researched 187 Alpina cars out of 450 and he found out 3 out of 187 Alpina cars are "updated" versions.

    AH62538_Buil Spec.pdf

    AH62540_Buil Spec.pdf

Also only one Z8 was manufactured with LSD. Now it is exhibited at the Classic Museum. I don`t know which museum he is referring to but I will learn this one as well.

Andrew, isn't Mobile Tradition no more and its now BMW Classic? Zed, could that be the Classic Museum that your friend is referring to? Very interesting information.

You still have some early Z8s hanging around here.

    Zed8,

What exactly do you mean by different platform? Just that it was built at the M location? Besides WBS and WAP, what other prefix do the VINs start with?

That must mean they set up the entire production run machinery there to do the test run, then disassembled it and moved it over to Dingolfin, which is a big operation. It appears there was a significant time lapse between those early cars and the subsequent ones, which would make sense with such a move.

Could it also be the "first official" U.S. car? If it is, there could be some collector value there.

    Car history...

Several years ago I had a concern about my cars history after the DE cars started coming up for sale. After making an inquiry, I was put in contact with someone that had access to BMW information and they were able to confirm that the car was delivered to the west coast and stayed here as a press car and/or a BMW executives car...which was the information given to me when I purchased the car.

    Thanks Ron,

Is there a site that will tell you the history of the car based on the VIN? (Asking anyone that might know).

I live very close to the Performance Center and was told that the blue/black car was a German press car. It is now back in storage and the silver Alpina is back on the floor.

Interesting that these Alpinas are shown with S62 motors. Is it a misprint? Otherwise, WTF?

My guess is it is a misprint. I ran a couple of other Alpina VINs and they all came up as having S62 motors.

Dan, these are Z8 which were "alpina-ized" The german text below show all the actions (including an Alpina VIN) that has to be taken to convert a Z8 to an Alpina
