Swapping US rear lights for european units on a US spec car.

Several years ago I exported a US 2001 Z8 to Holland.
Those were the days that the euro was strong.....

Frequently reading about the rear light problems, I decided to buy an extra set (spare) of EU-spec rear lights when they became available on ebay...

Now my US rear light is failing. The usual quick turn signal and occasional failing of the lower tube.

I want to replace the US units now with the EU spec units.

However just want to check here if somebody has experience with this since the system is slightly different and cabling diagrams are not available.

Otherwise any news on LED rear lights? I opened an old unit and it is quite easy to instrall a LED strip. However, again no cabling diagram and what will the computer do with a different resistance etc?

    Thanks, Z8Z1_HOOG

The person who knows the most about this is J?rgen, so I'd suggest maybe send him a message, as he has an immense knowledge of the units, their construction and related issues.

I spoke with Jurgen at breakfast last April and we talked about BMW making LED replacements for all the neon on the car. Are you sitting down? He said if BMW does it, they estimate the cost to replace all necessary lights and such to be $12,000!

J?rgen previously posted a site that contains wiring diagrams if that helps with the US to EU conversion. http://spaghetticoder.org/
I understand that the influx of US cars into the EU has created a shortage of new EU taillights. If you're already running US lights, and you can grandfather US replacements lights that are in supply that may be a consideration.

Knowing nothing about neon lights other than the failure mode is the gas escaping over time, I'll ask my question. Can the tubes that fail be recharged with neon gas?

If American spec cars going over to Europe need to be converted to two tone euro lights what happens to the us spec units taken out of these cars? It is estimated that several hundred have been repatriated. As far as recharging the tubes has anyone tried this?

    Electrical diagrams for rear lights

    Hi all,

I am doing the conversion US to Euro, I have the new tail lights already installed. I am looking for the electrical diagram of the rear lights, or of the wiring gthat controls these lights.

Would anyone be king enough to send/post the documents ?

    Thank you very much !!!

US - Europe Tail Lights conversion

I kept the US lights and they are working just fine.
I am still keeping them for now because I havenít found the guy/garage who could reprogram the Lighting Module from US to Euro.
As you know, in Europe the blinkers do not light up when you brake, but in the US both lights (blinkers and brake lights light up together).
It seems that the coding is a ZCS type that BMW used before around 2005. And I canít find a garage / specialist in France/Europe that knows how to re-code these lights and ZCS code. And of course, BMW doesnít want to do it !!
Would anyone here be able to point me in the right direction ? Some garage I could contact so they can help my local specialist (he could jot find the way to code the ZCS) ??
I think I read that someone here did this conversion/programming, but canít find the post. It would be great if someone could point me in the right direction.

    Thank you !

I suck at searches but it was either ZMates or bclaude who described the process and how they resolved it. Wait, maybe it was Peter Portugal who did it.

I will try to search again.

Copy of an earlier post I made: ďNo sure where you are located but the following BMW Alpina dealer I took my US Z8 to get the tail lights reprogrammed is: http://www.bmw-heidegger.ch/They have a large Z8 clientele, every time I have been there they had at least 5 Z8 in the shop for various reasons. They are a fantastic go to place for us who live within driving distance of LichtensteinĒ. As for the wiring diagram someone was asking for, that wonít be of any help. The modification canít be made curing and splicing wires as in the old days, it has to be done via a recoding of control unit unfortunately.
