2002 Z8 (#61688) - Sold

I just found this site. I am looking for advice on the best way to post for sale my 2002 Z8. It is the Titanium/Black combination and is 100% stock. I have a traveling job and the car has been lightly used and stored in my heated garage for 5 years. It has only 2337 miles on it and you might image it is showroom condition.

I am struggling with the decision, but i want to see what the market is for such a car. I am not sure that i can get over the emotional hurdle, but looking for this communities advice.

I was thinking of ebay, craigslist, or dupontregister. thoughts?

Autotrader.com has shown a good number of Z8's. It's rare to see a Z8 listed on eBay actually sell on eBay. Generally the bids don't reach the reserve price. That said, it's a great way to show your car. If you're in a large city, it could easily bring a buyer to you. Of course, beware that process, also. There are some stories with not so nice people doing nasty things to sellers of expensive cars. If you look through this site, I believe that you will find some information about precautions to take if you sell the car on your own. I also recall reading some postings from someone who was a broker and was selling a Z8 for a private party.

Lastly, I hope that you forgot a shop rag on top of your right airbox. :( If not, the car may have had an accident or may have strut tower deformity. Look at your first picture and you'll see some big gaps at the hood along the right side near the headlight.

I would certainly suggest that you sell such a car through a specialist dealer on consignment, you really don't want random people coming to your house to view such car.

I would suggest you speak to Bentley of Long Island (http://www.bentleylongisland.com/), they have sold a great number of Z8's and aren't too far from you.They currently have two Silver/Black 02 Z8's, one at 109, the other at 114. If you are patient your car should realize that too, especially if you have The Book, and everything else that came with it.

you got my attention on your comment on the picture and the gap in the hood. I must have run down to the garage in 10 microseconds! I looked and looked there is nothing abnormal. It must be the angle of the picture, lighting, or maybe the hood was not 100% closed (i had it open taking other pictures). But thank goodness, there is nothing wrong with my baby:)

Has anyone done this before and what are the costs, risks, and aggravation of this type of sale?

I have done it several times, and find it a very pleasant and efficient way of selling a car. You simply agree one a price you wish to realize, and allow the dealer to make a suitable profit to cover their costs, on a $100K say somwhere between $2,500-3,500 would seem reasonable, but each dealer has different comfort zone, and will no doubt let you know theirs right away.

You might also want to try a mainstream high end dealership. I sold my M5 that way at a Mercedes dealership. Even though they started out wanting only $3K, they ended up making about $5K. That was ok for me, since we decided on a price to start with and I got what I wanted. They had the expense of changing tires and such.
This same Mercedes dealership sold a very low mileage Z8 on consignment for over $130 about a year ago. You want to present your car with as much attention as possible. In turn, a dealership wants attention in their showroom. It's a win-win for both. You won't see much more attention than driving a Z8 into a Mercedes dealership. When I drove my car there to pick up my old tags, the salesmen piled out to look at the car.

I am in the car business and there is something very important you must know before consigning your car. Make sure the place is honest and reputable, because once you consign your car, most states consider that you have "passed title" on the car to the person selling it. If they sell your car and collect the money and for some reason do not pay you, your only claim is a civil one against the place that sold your car. You have no right to go to the buyer of the car and take it back. They are considered a "purchaser in good faith" and will be awarded a new title on the car even if you still have a loan on the car. I have seen it happen here in Los Angeles time and again. Most places declare bankruptcy and then you are out of luck. If they give you even a little of the money they owe you on a sale, they will not be prosecuted criminally since most District Attorneys look at this as they are attempting to pay you. I bring this up as a precaution simply because I have seen many people lose out on millions of dollars when their cars were sold by what they thought were reputable dealers. Do your due dilligence ahead of time, get it in writing, and most importantly, check regularly to see if your car has been sold. I have seen dealers sell a car and use the money to fund other deals and don't tell the owner their car has been sold until they come in only to find out their car is gone. Good luck!

That is great advice indeed - I used a company in Irvine called Autohaus some years ago, they paid promptly and are still in business, so I can recommend them, and I have been tracking cars at Bentley of Long Island for a few years, so I think they should be a good bet too - but do be sure to do your due dilligence.

Indeed, good advice. I have seen exactly that scenario play out. I have found a specialty new car dealership has been good, because they more rarely fold.
