The PDF list the Z8 to solve OBD communication problems.
I suspect we should all get all leters soon.

Thank you - I actually PAID to have the DME replaced last year because... my car wouldn't communicate with any emissions equipment! I will bring this letter with me when I see my dealer this week and they should be able to get NA to reimburse us.

I had the Dinan software installed, wonder what happens to that if the DME has to be redone?

According to the M5Board, it wipes out the Dinan software. However, you still have "license" to the upgrade. So, you can have it re-loaded at no charge.

without a state inspection or emissions inspection, whether or not BMW will alert you or send you a letter. I just had my Z8 in for "the frame inspection" as well as a few other minor warrranty repairs and my dealer meantioned nothing about this recall.
My state does not have an emissions inspection or inspection of any kinds so I wonder if I will even be notiified. I will have to ask to see if this is something they just automatically took care of and did not tell me -- if so, they would have wiped out my Dinan software in the process.

When Dinan software is installed in your car it only changes specific data. What this means is that in a case like this you can take your car in to have the emissions update, then have the Dinan dealer reflash the Dinan software. You will now have the BMW update as well as the Dinan software. If you had previously purchased the Dinan software you will not be billed again as we already have your vin on file.

I just received a note from BMW, which I eagerly opened hoping to hear something about the frame issue. Instead it was a recall notice about the pollution control equipment on the car. Anyone else receive the same? Been to a dealer yet?
Regards all

Received my notification a few days ago. However, I haven't received a call back to verify whether it applies to the Alpina or not. I'll post when I find out.

I received my letter. BMW dealer here knew nothing about it !
They subsequently did the upgrade after I showed them the letter.

Dealer called and said my VIN is included in the recall so it appears that Alpinas are included in this recall. By the way, my dealer didn't know about the recall until my call upon receipt of the letter.
The good news is the car is about to go on a 2000 mile trip so... this will just have to wait till we return.
Cheers!

at my service appointment they called me later in the day to say that the information which I originally received from BMW was incorrect and that a subsequent letter would be sent out to Alpina owners telling them so. This all took place last Friday and I have still not seen any follow up from BMW on this. I am not certain where the communication break down is, but possibly someone on the board can tell by looking at the letter and the vehicle's that are mentioned if the dealer is correct. From the little that I know it seems like the Alpina pre modified engine was not installed in any of these other vehicles. I would reconfirm with your dealer before you bring the car in.

Actually, that doesn't surprise me and I expected this to happen. That's one reason to wait till I get back in a couple of weeks before I worry about it. Unfortunately I have to have my windshield replaced ($%$$%^$# rocks in AZ!), so it will go in for that when I get back.
