What started out as a VANOS problem turned out to be 'piston slap' and caused AndyS in London to have a complete motor rebuild on his M5 under warranty. You can see the 'scaring' in the cylinders in these images.

thus the owner is very likely not on this board, he was an M5 owner based in the UK, and the work was done a year ago now. If you search the archives over there you may be able to find the post, look for the subject 'piston slap'.
