I put 6500 miles on the MPS's and can report back that they are very able tires.

On twisty mountain roads (Angeles Crest, Highway 1 + 58) they are excellent, providing sharp turn in, constant and clear feedback and not even a hint of anything to complain about. They are good sport driving tires at brisk road speeds.

On the track they have a tendency to howl loudly, and 'tread creep' is noticeable, but they grip well. They seem to respond cleanly to mid corner inputs, on or off the gas, and are predicable. One negative I have found is that at in the CA afternoon heat (+90ºF) they seemed to loose thier grip a bit.

I have now experimented with several pressure settings at the track, and on the road, both hot and cold. Depending on weather conditions I find the cold temp set at 40psi is very effective for all road uses, and at the track in cool weather, but on hottest days it seems to work well starting out 36psi. (The heat build up will bring it back up in a couple of laps)

To sum up the tires, I think they are a very good street-sport tire, they are good at the track in the cold, but they do seem to loose a bit in hot weather. I never had a bad slip, spin or slide with them, but there were times when I felt as if I wanted a more surefooted feel at the track.

Since changing these tires for the SO3's I have to say that the Bridgestones 'feel' much better, both at the track, and on the road. The MPS is a great tire, but it isn't the best tire.

Mac:

I'm a tire novice, so please bear with me. I just replaced the stock tires for a set of MPS A/S, which I am running at 38 psi front and 40 rear. I live in Altadena, so I am in similar weather conditions to you. For some reason, the handling feels much less surefooted and predictable in cornering than with the stock. It feels soft and kind of unreliable. That said, I havent pushed things to see if my instincts are wrong. Do you have any thoughts? Is it perhaps that the tires are too new to feel quite right? Will they improve over time?

Incidentally, if you live nearby, perhaps we should get together sometime and compare notes.

but I think they are the ones used by the team at the Z8 DE.

You pressures sound right, but you could also try dropping them by 2psi all round. Most tires when new will feel a little squirmy and loose. I've been told that this is due to the solutions that are used in the moulding process to let the tire release easily from the mold still being in the first .5 mm of the rubber, and it takes between 100-300 miles to scrub it off. I always take it a bit easy while the tire is settling in.

I'd love to meet up, though I'm working this and next weekend, but after that should be good. Maybe we could do a run up the Angeles Crest and escape the June Glooms.

Thanks for your quick response. I'll give it a shot. I'm heading off to Wyoming for a couple of weeks, and will be back in mid-July. I'll try reach you then. Thanks, too, for putting this board together; it's been a terrific help.

The A/S are different tires. They are designed to be a high performance all season tire. Many will tell you this is a contradiction in terms that cannot be resolved. I would agree. The DE uses regular MPS, not the A/S. The A/S were created for drivers who live in cold climates and are too lazy to put snow tires on- they are barely OK in the snow, but thats better than the MPS in the snow. The Z8 was tested wearing regular MPS. Don't feel bad- next time just get the regular Pilot Sports.

Your tire pressures seem too high though. I'm currently trying to determine the best pressure, but I am convinced 35 (what BMW recommends) is too high. I am running 30 (cold @65 F) all around. So far I am very happy with this setup.

I went back to the tire folk (America Tires in Pasadena), and they were kind enough to change out the A/S for the standard PS -- what a difference! All is well again. I am still running them at 35 cold, but may experiment with lowering that pressure, as Z8Mania suggests. Thanks for the help.
