2002 Z8. Pains me to write this as this is among my all time favorite cars, and I have owned many of the best. But, given the economy, like many, am looking for ways to reduce costs and secure a better position to weather the changes. I have an opportunity to significantly reduce our mortgage costs on a second home I also really love...... so something has to give!
For anyone looking for a drivers car, this is it. If you are looking for a stock garage queen, read no further. I understand both positions, but for me its about the driving.
15xxx miles, always superbly cared for, Silver/black. Had early performance package fix, shut lines are true and even. Has book, top, several covers, top storage rack, jacket, articles, etc etc.
Best of all, this car is a drivers dream, Quaife rear diff., Dinan performance chip, Dinan stage two suspension, short throw shift, Eisenmann race exhaust, Brembo brakes upgrade with red calipers, HRE 20" polished rims on Mich Pilot sports, hard wired V1 set up, all records. Three owners, all board members, past or present.
If you love driving, this setup is a very noticable upgrade over a stock Z8, which is very nice already.
thanks, John
I only have two pics on my laptop, but have tons on my home pc and will be able to send/post further shots in a few days.

John, sorry to see you might be selling but your rationale is sound. Good luck with this.

What's your location and price? I would direct interested parties to you if you are fairly close. Your car is set up similer to mine, a great driver.

What a well set up car, this will make someone very happy indeed! I'll certainly pass this one around, what is your price, and does it have the book?

Jerry, yeah, me too, but the big picture dictates a strong look beyond immediate desires. The thing I will miss most, assuming I get the approvals I need to move forward, is the cost to replace the car with current set up. I feel like the Z8 is a keeper kind of car and fully expect to do a replacement at some point but right now, big picture needs to be fed. I will post a couple of pics when I get home that will show exactly why this property is worth the sacrifice!

Car is located in N. Calif on coast (Mendocino). I have inn and will host serious buyers(when the time comes) who want to drive the car. Mac, I do have book and almost every piece of paraphanalia possible, top, top rack, cover, cockpit cover, window cover, original articles and z8 books, BMW jacket etc!
I would like $110 obo.

Sounds like a great enthusiast-driver car.
What is the year, and last 5 of the VIN?
riverflyer
April 2nd 2010, 20:26
02. I will post last five of the vin when I get home on this weekend. I think its a pretty late 02 build. Mike Metzger, from this board, was the previous owner.

April 2nd 2010, 20:29
VIN is 61897.
It is almost the very last 02 car, made just 9 after mine, and it missed being an 03 by whisker!

Hey Mac, just searched the archives and came up with 61987. Looks like either Mike or you transposed a number, but either way, its a very late 02 build. John
macfly
April 2nd 2010, 21:29
I changed that in the intro, and at that number I would have thought that although it was built in late 02 it should be an 03 model year car?
According to my records the 03 cars started right around AH61900. Of course the DMV paperwork will tell us what its model year really is, and the sticker inside the driver's door should give build date month & year.

Andrew, I will check the door and post up details but I am sure the title lists 02. I will verify number when I am at the car. thanks, as always for your help and expertise with all things Z8. John

Crazy idea..but would you consider selling just the brakes? I could drive up to do the change. You'll never get any money out of them on the car :)
macfly
April 3rd 2010, 15:18
Ian, you'd need 19" or 20" rims in place to do that, they won't fit inside stock rims. The swap takes about 4 hours to do once the car is on the lift.

Norcal, possibly. I have one guy who I have emailed back and forth with yesterday and I think he wants, should he buy it, the set up as is.
Please email me your idea and offer directly and we can talk. How many miles on your stock set?

The first 03 is car number AH61926, which belonged to a friend of mine and I sold it many years ago. It is all black. Last time I saw it, it was for sale at Perillo BMW in Chicago.
Just looked at their website. The car is still there for sale for $139,995.

Wow, I've seen that that car for sale on their site since 2008, they are really determined to get their price!

Andrew, you were correct, vin 61897 is it and the door plate says 07/02.
Here are a few more pics to show condition. Lights are clear (were replaced once), interior and exterior excellent. Wheels are true w/o curb rash but there is some stone pitting in clear coat of wheels.
Everything works as it should, top is excellent and rear window is good, but a bit cloudy I think. I have only driven the car once with the top up and that was due to a rainstorm.

Best of luck with your transactions. I too had to let go of my daily driver Z8 to help with purchasing a second property, which I hope to be a long term investment for my family ...

Here are a couple of shots of the property. I am still torn, but coming to grips with the idea.

Beautiful meadow. What are you asking for the car? By the way, I agree with whoever said that you will barely recover your $$$ in the mods. If you have the original parts, I would box them and include them in the sale.

Thank you, now you can see my dilemna!
Big picture demands the sacrifice but it is so hard to find a Z8 set up like this one. I am a big fan of the quaife diff and the whole package is perfect if you like driving and have fun mountain roads like I drive.

Maybe we should all go in on the property, look like we could build a perfect Z8 base up there! :-)

I'd love a country cottage somewhere like that, looks just heaven, say 15 acres of a 150 acre lot where 10 of us could have stunning retreats surrounded by beautiful roads!

100K each, 10 people and you can have 80 acres (http://www.trulia.com/property/1088878656--Almond-Dr-Templeton-CA-93465).

hi riverflyer,
enamored with your photos. where in northern cal is this?

April 9th 2010, 15:15
redZ8, we need over 127 acres so we can buy as a trust, and keep our tax base as agricultural not residential. That way we can live in an olive and almond orchard, grow our own produce via a cooporative, and each have lovely getaway homes.

hi riverflyer,
enamored with your photos. where in northern cal is this?
Inland Mendocino County. We actually live mostly on the coast, but sometimes the fog or ocean wind can be too much, so this is our nearby getaway. Its about 15 miles as the crow flies inland. Offers beautiful warm nights for outdoor summer living, opportunity to grow peppers and tomatoes and other summer crops and just a beautiful change of pace.
Incidentally, this talk of building a country club track has always intrigued me. Should there be real interest with ability to invest substantial funds, I have a good friend who bought an investment company a few years ago and one of the assets is a very large (several thousand acres) parcel just north of Napa Valley. The property offers large vinyards, several huge lakes and isolated valleys that could insulate track and garage areas completely from golf, vacation and other uses. Airstrips would be easy as well and its only 1/2 from all the restaurants and goodies in Napa.
They are open to the idea of a track in the development plan and things remain wide open presently. not many places could offer this proximenty and access and space.
Just an idea. If anyone has further interest, please feel free to pm and we can talk.

I just sold almost the same car, silver/red which I had pictures up on the site before. Brembos, quaife, everything you listed plus the coil over shock system. I had a friend who has coveted my Z8 for years that I sold it to for about $108k, it had 30k miles on it and it was perfect. It looked like a garage queen and I loved it, but I sold it for the very same reasons you listed. Better to have cash right now than extra cars. I have a 599 I am selling as well just because I am nervous about the economy. I had mine listed for 3 months before I sold it to my friend, everyone tried to low ball me. Most didn't care about all of the upgrades, but that's how it goes for upgrades it seems. I miss it sometimes, but I'm getting a new 911 Turbo cab to replace both cars so its not a bad compromise, there just won't be any crowds around the Porsche when I park it on the streets anymore!

ggg1, it is inspiring to know that i can put 14k on my car and still sell it for about what I was asking. The setup our cars have makes an already great car epic, imo.
I do agree about the economy and have been trying to get my financial life in line with what is and what may happen. I sold a turbo cab recently as I found that after getting the Z8, I never drove it. I do still have a tt coupe and its a great car, but the Z8 is so much more special, I just dont really want to part with it unless I absolutely have to. For now, it looks like I dont have to.
I wish I could buy your 599. Love that car.

Congratulations on selling the Z8 and getting the Turbo. John glad you are managing to hold on to the Z8. Remember when we first discussed it and I said this would hold up reasonably well in terms of depreciation and also be a very special car? It really is. Yes, the 911 turbos will drive circles around it on a track, but the Z8 is not about that. 599s pretty sweet too :)
