This car just sold on EBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-Z8-ALPINA-RARE-RARE-RARE-2003-BMW-Z8-ALPINA-ROADSTER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ66Q3a4Q7c65Q3a3Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem120389067169QQitemZ120389067169QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks#ht_1032wt_1231) for $115,000, which I think is an amazing price. It is one of only six Alpina Blue cars with a US VIN, so this is very rare, and will make an incredible addition to someone's collection. At the most there were no more than twenty five of the Alpina's signature Alpina Blue (http://www.bmwz8.us/vbb/showpost.php?p=7874&postcount=16) made. None came to the USA, there were six sold in Canada, the rest in EU, so this car is extremely rare and very collectable.

Someone in our club should buy this car! And the black/red 02 with 484 miles in Las Vegas. If only I had a winning lotto ticket!

Group buy !! ?? How many "members"? $1,000.00ea? Fractional Alpina! Store it in CA for out of state visitors?

Thats not a bad idea, this is such a rare car that we really shouldn't let it slip away, I'd consider doing a part ownership with a few trusted others, maybe if Jürgen is following this one what about a Z8 Club car for the US? We could rent it back to members who want to tour California?

I really don't think its a bad idea

Insurance, liability issues, management, what to do if a partner wants out, taxes.

Lot's of things to think about.

I think you west coast guys have a near perfect idea but it should be stored in Texas.

Only because I'm a giver.........

I am willing to put my $10K in the pot and find space in my climate controlled, secure facility in Cincinnati Ohio to store the car.

You know...I'll make it available to all members to drive when they're touring the Queen City.

If it is going at a good price it might just end up here in LA, every time I look at it I know it is a better investment than just about anything else out there at the moment!

The real question is where do you think the money finds it?

Curious it says it has the S62 motor?

I agree. I received this from the seller. It appears to be a report from BMW, it must just be a database mistake.

Or you could have the most rare Alpina!

Without a question, this car would make for a great investment. If only it had fewer miles on it.

The S62 reference must be a typo.

Andrew, if you buy it, I will buy a house in Palm Springs and you can store it in my garage:)
I bet they want a bunch of $$$ for it. My guess says at least $140,000, maybe more.

Looks like a buy it now of $125 just went up, so I say $115-120 gets the car. Damn I wish I had it, but right now it is both tax & pension fund time, so sadly there is now way I can get this one into my world, but I really hope someone in 'the family' gets it.

Just checked the ebay listing a few minutes ago. The "buy it now" is gone but with a current bid of $110,730 the "reserve not met" disclosure is gone. I would have thought that the reserve would have been set higher than this current bid. If it sells at that price, this is a real steal.

To anyone who is thinking of buying a car on eBay, and I have bought 2 cars including my Z8, I suggest that you not bid. Instead, I suggest 2 things:

Method #1. Sit back and watch the bidding. When it only increases 1k or so at a time, that is usually brokers who are trying to get the car at a low enough price to be able to resell it at a profit. Then, in the final hour, submit your max bid remembering that eBay will automatically submit your bids in small increments until your max bid is reached. By waiting until the final hour, your chances of keeping the bidding low is much better so you may save a ton of money. Be sure to have eBay send updates to your phone so that you can bid at a moments notice.

Method #2. This is how I bought my 2003 Z8 with 14k miles and all of the options including the book, window sticker-you name it: After submitting a few bids to show my interest, I emailed the seller and started some serious dialog. He had started the bidding at 90k (as I recall) and the bids slowly climbed to 100k over about 4 days. Then they went to well over 100k but the seller and I had continued emailing each other. As we did, I learned that the seller knows who is bidding (in this case it was a group of whole sellers) and the seller can cancel the sale as long as it is done 24 hours prior to the end of the sale. Because the seller and I had developed a "relationship" he decided that he wanted me, a sports car lover, to have the car rather than someone who just wants to resell it. So, I bought it for 100k.

Well worth the effort.

Scott

The seller's name is Francesca Falcone, and she sent me these pictures of the two areas of concern - this car looks to be a really good investment - I wish I could snag it!

NOTE: SLIGHT PAINT DAMAGE ON CENTER OF LOWER FRONT APRON

Is there damage or sumptin' to the headliner on the hard top? It look s like an indentation on the drivers side.

Scott, could it be "just" dirt? You really need to wear cotton gloves to keep the Crema from getting marks on it when lifting.

jdillane
March 14th 2009, 16:14
looks like a reflection of the cover, not damage. (edited to add: Oops, I was looking at the exterior not the interior. I suspect that is dirt but confirmation is definitely warranted.)

Regarding ebay strategy. An ernest bid followed by dialogue with seller is how I got mine in 2005. Actually, I was the underbidder and after the winner failed to come up with the $$, seller second chanced me. I declined but met with seller and we were able to find common ground.

The car looks certain to sell now, as it has already reached reserve and there's 24 hours left. If anyone from SoCal buys the car Marty can help with a great trucker to get it back home, and I'll want a day to take some pix of it too!

Andrew,
Given its rarity, how about buying the Alpina and selling the Topaz car:thumbsup:

macfly
March 14th 2009, 23:13
The thought did cross my mind, but honestly its just too much messing around, besides the Topaz one I have is just so totally perfect that the only thing I'd swap it for is a sub 100 mile car.

I did... and 'm very happy with the car. It is really a very nice car. And the hardtop is also in perfect condition.
I would like to get in touch with people that have experience in bringing a car from Toronto to the US. What is the easiest way to get it done.

Wow, good for you, that is a rare gem indeed!!

I think each state has different rules on importing Canadian cars, but the changes required are small, and all BMW's with the AH6**** are 50 state legal cars.

Beautiful car! I had just purchased mine a week or so before yours came up for sale on ebay. If I hadn't.....well you get the point. That was a great price.

The dealer (Victoria BMW) arranged for a broker to bring it thru customs and then had it shipped from there.

Congrats

Check your top. All of them (at least the Alpinas anyway) have a small indentation on both the driver and passenger side to accommodate taller folks and/or helmets. I know because I use that area in my car when the hardtop is installed.

Scott Pettit
January 26th 2010, 04:29
The hardtops should be the same for the Alpina and the straight Z8.
