View Full Version : Trunk lid dampers malfunctioning

Has anyone had a problem with their trunk lid dampers(?) not keeping the trunk lid open? I went into my trunk for the first time in a couple of months and when I opened it and went to place something in it, it came down full force! No damping whatsoever. If I push it open as far as it will go it will stay open, but if I start to close it at all, it falls right down. Any thoughts, ideas? Do I need new dampers or is there a way to adjust them.
Thanks in advance,
-dave

Mine does that too, if it isn't fully up it just drops - I think it has always been the same?

Mine does this too. It has worsened over the years. I noticed it deteriorating in the first six months I had the car (from new). So, at an early service appointment, I had them order me a new set of trunk dampers which I keep in a box in my garage. It has gotten so bad that I think I will install them now.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I'll just order a new set and install them.

Mine has done this for so long that I feel like it has always done it. I brought it up with the dealer several years ago who told me this is the norm. I did not question their reaction.

I have the same issue. If I push the lid carefully all the way to the up position it will stay up. Watch your head though!

Same on my car.

I had that problem about a year ago, replaced them under warranty. Those are failing now (after only a year!) so I had them order a new set to be replaced under warranty again.
As I recall, the original ones kept positive force on the trunklid so you had to push against them to close the trunk. The new ones I had installed a year ago weren't anywhere near that robust. I hope this third set works more like the originals. It seems they just lose their charge over time so I'm not sure having a spare set in your inventory will be very helpful - might as well install them.

I also had to have mine replaced under warranty for the same problem. As stated by other members, the new ones aren't as robust and I will probably have to repalce this set before too long.

Mine does the same, i.e., drops unless the lid is near the top.

Mine, too. Even if it stays up initially, I have learned not to trust it.
Given the threads thus far, I wonder if this is the norm.

Mine failed as well, and was replaced just before the warranty expired. That was 16 mos. ago; now the replacement set is failing! Seems to be worse in the cooler months (gas contraction?). Will likely replace with next oil change service...
