I would have started a separate thread but since my question is related I will post it here.

Anyway, I scheduled an appt to take my Z in to Erhard BMW in West Bloomfield MI. The Z has been sitting for over a month due to press of biz and I have yet to address the engine light. I am leery about their experience but will at least see what they say diagnostically.

Recall, mine is a euro Z. When I made the appt I asked about how they screen cars for recalls. ( I understood from prior experience at another BMW dealer that my Z did not show up on the recall list for the auxillary fan.) I mentioned this and the service rep said that I would have to go through BMW NA to address first.

While not unreasonable, I am left wondering if this is standard practice for the euro Z's.

Any one else encounter this sort of thing?

Lastly, neither of my keys remote buttons work. I tried the tricks mentioned on another thread to no avail. The keys stopped functioning when my mirror leaked. Possible coincidence but I am also worried that the euro keys may not be serviceable by the US dealers.

Any one else encounter this sort of thing too?

If I can get these sorted out without too much grief, I will proceed with the PP. Roads in MI are deteriorating and we have been cautioned to expect them to continue to worsen due to budget constraints.

But I digress.

Any advise on how to best deal with the recall matter and the keys will be appreciated!

You are sadly correct on the key problem. My first Z8 was an EU car, and I discovered that the transmitter frequency to use the auto-locking etc is different on EU & US cars, meaning that once your key 'dies' you have to get a replacement from BMW AG. You can send them your VIN, and they should be able to program it correctly for your car. If you aren't a member of the Z8 Club this is one of the things that they can be very helpful with.

The car can been checked for any recalls on any BMW key reader, so that won't be a problem, but if your car needs something specific to the federalized emissions you might fall between NA & AG. Usually the check engine light is an 02 sensor or the Mass Air Flow meter, both of which are easy to replace. If your dealership looks like they are getting out of their depths I'd suggest calling Dana Caldwell at Peter Pan BMW, they are the shop with the greatest knowledge, and are wonderfully helpful, he might be able to shed more light on the situation, or have his tech guys talk to yours. His phone is 650-294-2123.

Good luck with it.

Thanks, Andrew.

I recalled reading (probably here) something along the lines you advise about the euro key. I will probably only get one and keep the others as limited function back-ups. I don't think I am able to activate the alarm without a functioning key.

I am the second owner so possibly the first tended to the recall matter, but my auxillary fan broke into a dozen or so pieces leading me to think that the recall had not been tended to. The fan is plastic. Makes me wonder if anyone else has experienced this. Perhaps it is not directly related to the recall either.

The fan issue is beyond my own memory or experience, I haven't heard of one breaking up before, and am not sure if this is what the recall was for or not? I know there have been some issues with the radiators getting gummed up that have been reported by the Z8 Club, and you can read about those here (http://www.bmwz8.us/pdf/Z8Club_Radiator.pdf).

Just heard from the dealer. They do not find my 2001 on the recall list for the aux fan. They also have no record of the matter being previously addressed. I am looking at $985 for the replacement. Actually that is about what I expected. But I am perplexed how my 2001 escapes the list especially with my fan breaking apart. I think I will give Bill Stuart a call and see if he can shed light on this.

Also, I am quoted $625 for two replacement keys. I will remind them of the euro pedigree and keep my fingers crossed!

Update:
I spoke with Bill Stuart this afternoon. What a nice man. He's going to speak with an engineer or two about the auxillary fan. I will keep my fingers crossed for the outcome.

I ended up only purchasing one replacement key for my euro Z. Dropped her off at the dealer yesterday to sync the key to the car. The dealer called to say that I have the wrong mirror and because of this, they cannot get my new key to function (apparently there is a computer chip in the mirror). I got a replacement mirror from Magnadon last year. Now I am convinced that the failure of my mirror caused my keys to fail (they stopped functioning when the mirror leaked) and wonder if Magnadon sent me a US mirror. I will have to ask if they can sync a US key.

Also, I contacted Bill Stuart while on the road today. He asked that I email him the particulars. I have searched a few threads looking for his email address but do not see it. Does anyone have it handy?

Just so you know, the recall on the auxiliary fans was initiated due to the potential for their electrical circuits to overheat and catch on fire. Definitely something you want to replace if it hasn't been.

Indeed but apparently the recall did not extend to my 2001. Its a euro model that I believe was built in late 2000. Not certain if all euros were outside scope of recall or not though.
