Porsche now offers an Apple Play radio with full Apple integration for it's classic models. I wonder if this is something that could simply replace the Z8 head unit without any additional modifications?

I have just received my PCCM 1DIN head and hopefully the retrofitting work is straight forward. I have also contacted Kramer Automotive (supplier of this Porsche PCCM head), this is what Hans-Peter Schmidt (CEO) reply:
"We also had several discussions with BMW Classic about the Z8 Radio replacement and Im also a fan of the Z8 I had one in the 2000er years but sold after some years"
That's great news. I will keep you all posted how I go with this PCCM installation and hopefully all the latest connectivity works seamlessly. Cheers.
Looking forward to your results.

Also interested to hear if this works!
All done within an hour, almost plug in and play. All connectivity work perfectly, Apple car play, phone, Nav, radio, spotify,Siri, msg etc. except DAB or digital radio which needs to run another antenna. Decided not to run cable for DAB, (could be messy). Looks great .. really classic (close to stock head)
Here are some photos and the layout PIN for BMW head unit and the adapter (from my audio integration specialist)
Looks OEM.
edit; well, I realized I wasn't seeing the Porsche script until it was pointed out by dpz8.

That is fantastic! Can you tell any improvement in sound quality? I currently run a hardwired iPod through the (disconnected player) CD connection and the sound quality is a huge improvement on the radio section of the Z8 radio. Actually ok and livable unlike the FM tuner. The source material obviously plays a large part, thus the question.

That looks great! Thanks very much for the pictures and the adapter information.
I have been looking at the Porsche head unit to install in an older Porsche 964 I have. Another alternative you may want to consider is the Blaupunkt Bremen 46 Dab. Blaupunkt-Bremen-SQR-46-DAB.html both the Porsche Unit and the Blaupunkt have not yet released to the USA. I like the look of the Porsche Unit but hesitate to live with the Porsche logo showing in the Z8. Although the Blaupunkt unit is not as nice looking (IMHO) as the Porsche unit it does match the Z8 aesthetic and has all the modern conveniences with USB and Bluetooth connections.
Sound quality is excellent!! as good as playing from CD. Radio FM, phone audio quality, songs from Spotify and storage all really good. Its as good as what you can get out from the existing amplifier.
You don't actually get to see the Porsche script on the head as the existing console flap managed to shadow it. So, it's just like OEM but when you turn On the unit the first time, a Porsche logo will animate over the touchscreen. Unless you turn Off and On again the radio, the logo will not appears again.
Will post photo once I get the Porsche script vinyl wrapped and the head surrounding leather slightly darken to match the new head.
PS, please make sure any new head when fitted is not protruding out too far, the console flap should still close perfectly. This PCCM unit happens to fit like a glove.
Here is the photo. all done.
This is really great news. Would you mind posting a link to the radio and the adaptor.Thank you for "taking one for the team."
Hi Craig
Links for radio: https://www.fvd.net/de-en/9116455900...ion-1-din.html
You should be able to get this in US, contact Porsche. I bought mine online from FVD. Any of your audio installer should have the quad lock 40 pin adapter otherwise you can source via eBay. (see above email trail.)
Hope this helps. Cheers & good luck
Very interesting idea, I liked its austere appearance - fits perfectly into the interior.
Hi Jim
The head comes with a small media box (located behind the head) with USB connection to charge phone, hand free calls and for Apple CarPlay. You can see spec on link: https://www.fvd.net/de-en/9116455900...ion-1-din.html. Cheers
Too bad the link does not work, I did not have time to look at the specification
I found this other radio, but not the one originally shown?

Thanks for the fresh link!
Does this Porsche radio have an input for the BMW CD player to interface? Not that anyone really uses CD's much, but it would be nice if the CD player was more than just dead weight. Seems like they could make this radio for BMW as well as Porsche with corresponding faceplate logo and BMW on the screen during boot-up sequence.
Thank you for sharing your experience, sounds like a compelling upgrade. A few questions: 1) I suppose you can get navigation through Apple CarPlay as opposed to buying the maps for the unit. Is Apple Map useable despite the small screen size. Could you share a photo in Apple Map mode with us?2) Does Apple CarPlay require a USB connection or does the unit support the newer CarPlay interface via Bluetooth?3) The last post mentions a BMW specific unit. But I can’t find it anywhere. Is it already available? Can you provide a link?4) The price difference between the US and EU version is quite steep: $1,200 vs. €1,600/$1,800. I am based in Europe but the US version is very temping. Most of my use age is via Apple CarPlay anyways. I wonder what the FM and DAB tuner differences are. Thanks again!

Hi Bruno,
Please see attached photos on Nav display via Apple Carplay. It is as good you going to get for such small screen and the nav audio is excellent. Yes, it requires a USB connection via back of the head and the cable is routed under the side carpet to the phone cradle, see photo. Not sure whether any latest head has been released with bluetooth connection for Carplay and you could confirm this with with Hans-Peter Schmidt, e[email protected] of Kramer Automotive in Germany.
As you are based in Europe, it would be easier to communicate with Hans. He is the maker of the unit. Z8 existing antenna support FM only but DAB is possible if you are prepared to run another cable. Hope this helps. Cheers PK
Thanks Peter, very helpful. Too late to add it to my Christmas list but I am very tempted. I did reach out to Hans Peter, thank you for the details. One last question. What type of phone cradle are you using and how is it secured to the console. That also looks like a nice setup. I am using a cup holder based cradle but it is very unattractive. I like your setup much better. Thanks!

Hi Peter,
I spoke to Hans-Peter Schmidt on Friday and there is no BMW solution for out Z8 at the moment, the problem is BMW Classic. I will try to contact the BMW Classic and see, what the problem is. Do you have more details about installing the radio, would be nice to have,
thanks
Best regards from Dortmund

Based on all the good input from Peter, I just took delivery of a Porsche radio. I can only wish our German Z8 club and BMW Classic was as proactive as Porsche Classic is. In the meantime we will live with a Porsche logo on our Z8.I am gathering all I need for the installation and was wondering what type of antenna the Z8 comes with, is it a windshield antenna and is there an amplifier hidden somewhere. The Porsche Classic does come with an adapter from a standard antenna cable connector (male) to what is required for the Porsche unit. Can Peter or anyone else with experience on the matter tell me what type of antenna connector I will find in the back of the Z8 radio and if I need to worry about an amplifier hidden somewhere. I did get the wire harness adapter on eBay and that should take care of power and speakers. My only concern at this junction is the antenna. Thank you!

Hi Bruno,
Good to hear you have your PCCM unit. I did not use the antenna adapter as the Z8 does not have a digital antenna. You could run a separate cable/antenna for it but would be quite laborious. I believe the antenna is located in the booth/trunk.
As for the wire harness adapter, your stereo guy would need to provide a lead for the 12V to trigger the Amps. The rest of installation should be a straight forward job for your stereo guy. I generally used the Apple Play for Nav and phone, music via Spotify and iTunes, radio for general news and music (analogue).
Bruno, as for the iPhone cradle, I have fabricated the aluminium holder with similar cup holder 'hook' dimensions to suit the holder slot and the rest of the components are standard hardware.
Hopefully, you are able to see the attached PDF file for the cradle etc ... I am having problem to upload the PDF file to this thread.. if you can't see attachment, send me your email address and will forward you the file separately. Cheers PK
