In his own words, from the Roadfly board.............

I am a longtime Valentine 1 user (in my M5) and love it, but for the Z8 I went with a custom-install Passport SRX system. Why?

    1) The Passport SRX has laser jamming, not just detection. Z8 Eldred and others posts really sold me on the need for this.

    2) I wanted stealth mount in the Z8. I just felt that a visor mount, or windshield mount, would:

    a) detract from the beautiful appearance we all love in our Z8 cockpit

    b) be a theft target in an open-top car (and who wants to install/de-install it every time you drive or park...)

    c) have lights that would be very visible at night, to police especially. I was just pulled over the other night in my M5, 50 in a 35 zone, trailed me in the dark -- no radar or laser. I got off with a verbal warning -- no ticket. I really believe that if the cop sees a lighted up detector you are more likely to get a ticket rather than a warning. My V1 in my M5 is set up with a remote display in the instrument cluster, but I didn't see a good option for that in the Z8.

    3) Sure I miss the arrows of the V1, but I love the Expert Mode of the SRX. Overall the SRX gives you clearer info on number and type of sources.

    4) Read the stuff on www.radartest.com such as their article about radar-from-behind.

    5) The Passport SRX can be installed beautifully in the Z8. Below are some pictures of my install, and more can be seen at http://www.cartunes.com/installs/bmw/2002_z8/index.htm My install is completely hidden, even the passenger in the Z8 may not notice it.

Beware that the neon lights of the Z8 cause false alarms on any laser detector. I find these annoying, and I am currently working on a solution to filter the offensive light frequencies from the Z8 neons.

Fantastic. See you did it in LA. I live in Altadena. Who did it, and at what price? What about the stereo upgrade -- it seems better to do both together.

It wasn't my car, I took the post from another board.

For a moment, you had me all excited. Perhaps I'll ask them for pointers on whom to use out here. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Talking Please do.....

If you have no luck I know a few folks in the rap community who do insane custom kits in their Lambos and Escalades, so I can find out who those guys go to, I think there is one guy here in LA that they all swear by.

    Macfly:

I'd appreciate any further suggestions you might have. I'm striking out on a stereo/radar upgrade in the Pasadena area. I have one particularly burning issue besides the question of how to instal radar in a way that wont interfere with the car's aesthetics, and that is how to hardwire my IPOD (my second most fun toy) in the Z8 in a functional and, again, aesthetic way. Any pointers?

    Suggestions

I would put the iPod in the place where the (useless) phone goes, and it would be easy to have a wire to the stereo there, as the phone is connected into the stereo.

I don't know any top fitters in your area, but you could ask the team at Rusnak Porsche if they know a top notch HiFi specialist, or call Andrew at Avus in Glendale, he might have some good ideas, 818 500 7663.

    Please keep us posted.

Definitely interested in this mod sometime after the holidays. I'm down here in the S.Bay, Orange County area but would make the drive if I knew the installer was competent to do the installation in a Z8. Keep me posted...Ron

I would suggest call Ed Cobett @ Spectrum Collision

They are in Irvine, and are a BMW specialist body shop, one of the few sanctioned to do repairs on the Z8. They are owned by the Shelly family, who own the Shelly BMW chain in OC.

Ed is very knowledgable about all the BMW specialists in your area who might be able to fit a system in like this.

    His phone is 949 597 8200.

Let us know what you put on.
