    Thoughts on 2005-2006 Ford GT

I am considering purchasing a 2005-2006 Ford GT (NOT as a replacement for the Z8!). Like the Z8, I have lusted for one of these since they came out, and having one as a stablemate for the Z8 seems to me to be the perfect pairing of modern/retro classics, coupe and roadster. Pricing on the GT appears to be softening and I am thinking this might be a good time to jump into the market.

I know there are a few members of this forum that own or have owned the Ford GT and would value any insights as to the ownership experience along with suggestions on things to watch out for during the search process.

I have a 2006 since it was new. I have 24,000 trouble free miles on it. It is a thrill every time I drive it. It is brute strength. It is also so easy to tweek another 100 HP. out of it with a pulley and a tune.
The Goodyear Tires are a horror. I put Bridgestones on it and they are much better. Go to the Ford GT Forum.

I am surprised to read about the market softening on these special halo cars, but I have not been actively tracking. Good luck with your search! I see that there is one for sale near my home, which I will check out for fun...

Thanks for your comments Joe. I love your Tungsten GT, my two favorite colors being Midnight Blue and Tungsten. How do you compare the driving experience with your Z8? If you had to give up one or the other, which would you let go?

Ed, I believe there has been a general softening of the collector car market over the past year, and the Ford GT having had such a spectacular run-up in values over the last 3-4 years is probably as susceptible to an "correction" as any car out there, short of air-cooled Porsches perhaps. This is confirmed by the Hagerty valuation site, as well as my own monitoring of values. Interestingly, the Hagerty site shows Z8 values as holding steady, although I wonder if that is really true.

I tell people that my Cars are like children. You love them all for different reasons. The Z8 is a Classic. The GT is a thrill. The 12C is a blend of the two. My Virage is a great Touring Car.

Joe, I fear your mind is clouded by having too many awesome choices! But I take your meaning. Thanks again for the input.

I stare at the image of that GT and I am reminded of the words of Professor Fate in The Great Race: "You I hate!"

There will be a glut of GT's. When the new one comes out, a lot of owners are selling their 2005-2006 to be able to afford the new one.

Even with this Hagerty newsletter, I'm still floored about the pricing on the Ford GT.

So what is the current price range? Given the downturn?

From Autotrader today, the range is 260 to 320K, unless it is in the Gulf livery colors in which case you can ask for another 200K. Silicon Valley Ferrari near my home has one that I'll stop by to make a look at this weekend.

Ed, let me know what you think if you go to look at the Silicon Valley Ferrari GT. Color is one of my two choices, asking price seems like a reasonable starting point.

    Thanks,

Sure, I don't really know these cars, so if there's something special you want me to ask please let me know via this string or via a PM. Also in my neighborhood there's also a Ford dealership that has an untitled GT (Blue/White). The owner of Towne Ford apparently will sell it, but only for top dollar.

I am only learning about these cars now myself. No specific items to look for, other than general condition. These cars are prone to being wrecked, so that is probably the one thing to be on the watch-out for. As far as the untitled car, I am hoping to drive this thing, so not looking to pay top dollar for a zero mile car. Thanks, and don't worry about it if you don't get the chance to check it out.

I can evaluate general condition for you, but be warned I am picky.

Shelby Smith at Elite Autos is the dealer on these cars. I purchased mine from him and he is very well known on the GT Forum

Thanks Ed, good information in the Buyers guide. I had not seen pictures of the GT at Ferrari of Silicon Valley, did not realize it was a "stripe delete" car, which probably takes it out of my consideration set. Nevertheless, I would be interested in your impressions if you do go to see it.

If I can squeeze in a drive in the Z8 to see the Ford GT today, I would still like to see it myself to get a feel for these cars.

Yes, I removed them. Nothing I own is stock, I touch everything.

Remember for the Premium you pay for the heritage model, you are getting baby blue paint with an orange stripe, and absolutely nothing else.

Thanks Joe for the advice. My recollection from an earlier post by Z8mania is that these cars are composed up to 9/10 above and beyond that the front and the rear of the car like to switch places.

My wife had plans for us this past Saturday, but I still plan to see the Ford GT local to me on Friday. I'll report back then.

i own a black with silver stripe 2005 GT. Original owner. Will never sell! Incredible to drive, gorgeous lines. Also maintenance very reasonable when compared to other exotics!! GT community great!! Many owners have multiple cars in different colors!! I believe these multiple owners are selling off the "surplus" cars if they got an allocation for the new GT! I know personally a few of them. But they will always keep at least one of the 05 06s. Good time to buy. Their prices are sure to recover!!

I'd have one in every color too if I could, but then again I'd need several airport hangers to house all the cars I'd like! :-)

That is good to know about the driving experience, maintenance costs and strong community of owners,

The FGT I was to assess was sent to a local Ford dealership for repairs. On its drive to be serviced/smog-checked I saw this FGT last week out of the corner of my eye. Not sure what to make of this FGT because:
    • It's a without any of the 4 options, I like the stripe delete but want the upgraded Mcintosh sound system.
    • The catalytic converters were removed by one of its 4 or 5 previous owners. Tracked?

Those are my thoughts too, I'd trade more miles for fewer owners because I want more consistent stewardship of the car.

I must agree, but since the GT is very rare in Europe, I went for a Ferrari 430 Scuderia as a stablemate for my Porsche 911 turbo convertible. As a result I didn't drive the Porsche much from that moment on, and in the end sold the Porsche. A few months ago I decided I needed a convertible again and I always loved the Z8 since it came out. My plan, years ago, was to wait untill prices of the Z8 dropped, hahaha, well that worked out fine :-)

So what I'm trying to tell you; don't wait and just follow your dream, you've been waiting 10 years now, simply buy the thing, or a 430 Scuderia; great car as well !!

    That is very cool.

As much as I love all the earlier FGT's and am a Ford guy at heart. I am not totally head over heels for the new FGT. I like it a lot, but I don't love it.

The length of the body behind the rear wheels and the V-6 are the deal breakers for me. That and they are expensive.
