BMW Twin Power Turbo oil or stick to Castrol TWS?

2 weeks ago I brought my Z8 to my local BMW dealer for a service. They told me that BMW AG ended their deal with Castrol and switched to Shell oils for the complete range of models. For my S62 (M) engine the advice was the new BMW Twin Power Turbo oil (actually Shell Helix 10w60 oil, supposedly with some additives especially for BMW...?). This oil is as BMW stated 'top notch', and comes at a price of 29 euro's per liter (US: that would be about 32 dollars per quart) After a small internet search I decided to go along with the advice. Directly after I picked up the car I checked the oil level (I specifically asked to not overfill it, something that happens quite often) and was happy to see they didn't. Oil colour looked normal (amber).
Last friday I checked my oil level and was surprised to see that the colour (after 2 weeks and just under 100 kms of driving) already looked very dark on the dipstick. I decided to take the oil out (bought a PELA oil extractor; works like a charm and 8 liters of Castrol TWS online), and put in the Castrol TWS; you can see the result at the pictures below. What are your thoughts, to me it looks like a very quick oxidation (i.e. loss of dopes) of the new BMW oil ??

Last year authorised service used the same shell oil for my car. But this time I will tell them to use Castrol Titanium FST 10w60. Since they are authorised and if they don`t sell this oil, I will take the car to a non-authorised BMW service an tell them to use FST.

They are totally identical oils inside the bottle.

Just checked, you're right, it is the same indeed, I understand that the 'TWS' is the stuff (formerly) sold by BMW as approved M-oil but the Edge FST 10w60 is exactly the same oil, thank you, didn't know that.
How long/how many miles has you BMW/Shell oil been inside your Z8? I am very curious how much your oil is oxidated, can you tell?

p.s. from what I understand from the Dutch Castrol website, this will be 'our' future oil; Castrol EDGE Supercar 10w60 FST, approved for all BMW M-models, Koenigsegg, Ferrari FF, Ferrari F12Berlinetta, Audi R8 V10 and Bugatti Veyron, quite an impressive list.

I have not changed yet. Planning to have it changed in September before I will leave for Munich Germany for the festival.

Is the Z8 Club planning some events? At least three of us (DirkZ8, Z8Doc and ///M Blitz) are going to be there. If the Club is not planning anything, you and the three of us should meet and swap stories. We're coming in on September 2nd and staying through the 14th, although there is a big drive in the middle of all that.

Afaik club has no plans. But I got my tickets for the festival. One complimentary and the second is discounted. My car is invited for the event. So it will be with the other invited 999 BMW motor vehicles in the festival. We should meet there. Before we leave we should exchange our phone numbers and emails. I will be in Munich on September 8th and will be around, mostly around Alps until 17th or 18th.

Is it a detergent oil? If so it has simply has suspended material in it. Thats not necessarily bad - as long as you have been changing your oil regularly. There is a point where it becomes supersaturated and the particles will 'fall out'

Hello Ted, thanks for asking. I am safe actually we are all safe. A group of soldier attempted a coup yesterday. In Istanbul they first occupied two bridges connecting european and asian side. Also they occupied the airport. They did not let the aircrafts to take off. In Ankara, the capital, with an attack helicopter, I think it was a Bell cobra, they bombed the parliament and the special forces building. Later it was downed by an F16.
All night till morning in Istanbul I was awake and frightened. F16s were flying low on Bosphorus. 4 or 5 times we heard explosions. We all thinks it was sonic boom because no bombs were deployed in Istanbul afaik. So everything is normal right now.

It suspends particles within it, as opposed to non detergent types which stick particles to surfaces. The problem beinv that galleys and journals get slowly blocked

Just checked, all Shell synthetic oils seem to have detergents added, and Castrol TWS has too.

Meh, I'm sticking with Liqui-Molly. I like their packaging.

    Satch, be careful with other oils, please check out this thread;

I saw this Vanos unit myself when I was at Nowack in Germany, it's like 7-Up; the difference is clear!

You're right about "wrong oil," but I'm not talking about substituting 5-30 for 10-60. Here's what I use:

    Here's a link.

Although I still use Castrol TWS 10w-60 in my Z8 and E39 M5 (same motor), a lot of folks on the E39 M5 Board use Liqui-Moly and seem happy with the results. It is a bit cheaper, and lots of people on that forum have cars with well over 200k miles. My guess is most of the people on this forum change their oil more because of the passage of time than because of the accumulated mileage, and any reputable 10w-60 oil, including Liqui-Moly, will do the job just fine.

Another thing is that I checked viscosity of both the BMW and the Castrol oil today to find out that the BMW (Shell) oil is substantially THICKER (at room temperature) than the Castrol oil, same rating, both 10w60... Any thoughts?
