    starter/ solenoid problems?

    The last few weeks when I jump into the car and hit the stater button I will hear a click then nothing, hit it again and the car starts. When I was ready to leave BMW CCA Oktoberfest yesterday I had to hit the starter 4 times with just a click each time before it would fire. Is this commonly a solinoid or a starter problem, or maybe a switch problem? Also I'm coming up on 40k, is there a service for that milage and I may have BMW do that at the same time.

    Ps nice seeing Satch and his Topaz Z8, there was also a stratus and creama parked next to us on the lawn

    The interim fix to your problem is to simply disconnect the battery for a few minutes. The car will start up instantly after you have reconnected the battery. This procedure has helped me out on a trip for a week or so prior to making it to the BMW shop where the switch was replaced. No fun if your trunk is stuffed with bags and gear. But it worked for me.

    Kept key in accessory position for 24 hours. Got one start then just a click for the next 6 trys. Pulled the battery. Reads 12.8 volts with 780 cold cranking amps down from 950 new. That may be it? Battery is 5 years old and always trickle charged.

    Mine has been clicking on and off for the past 9 years, went through 3 BMW branded batteries and 3 rebuilt starters, finally coming to the conclusion that the BMW batteries just won't hold charge, even with a battery tender (tried 3 different brands of those as well). Last week I installed a Duracell AGM battery. Let's see how long this one lasts.

    PS - my '01 M Coupe was parked next to your Z8 at the Stockton

    The battery changed.
    The key left in the ignition overnight.
    The click was increasingly present ...


    then this year the car refusing to start, change and solenoid / starter and since everything is OK


    The starter by its position under the engine is very sensitive to moisture, the presence of exhaust manifolds 5-10 cm next does not help the life of the solenoid / starter.


    Cost of the operation in Europe: 120 Starter BOSCH standard exchange.
    1h assembly / disassembly by me.


    and now it works like a charm!

    Replaced the starter for the 4th or 5th time in the car's life. This time not with a rebuilt BMW starter but a new BOSCH starter (same thing but new vs rebuilt).
    Note the burn marks on the contacts of the solenoid. This is the source of the click-start-fail. Let's see how long this one will last.
