    Peformance Package Availability

Now that the good weather has finally arrived here in the Northeast, I want to move ahead on installing the Performance Package. Regrettably, they have been discontinued and are out of stock in the US and Germany. Anybody know of where I might locate one? Peter Pan BMW does not have any.

I guess it is a case of asking around, but BMW Classic and the Club should be able to help.

The Performance Package has been available for a long time using the part number 51 71 0 420 758. Unfortunately, this seems no longer to be the case. However, the individual parts can still be found. Therefore, here is the list of all ingredients of this package:

I would see if Bill Stewart can help you. He has been a big help to the Z8 community. Do you have his number? Do you need help getting it installed?

I acted on Ton's suggestion of ordering the component parts individually, and ordered the pieces last night. Now I need to determine the best place to get it installed within a reasonable distance of my home in northern NJ. I saw on a recent post you gave a strong endorsement to BMW Westchester, which is about an hour from me. Do you happen to know if they have experience with the PP installation? If anyone else has a dealer or independent shop with experience installing the PP, I would appreciate hearing about it. Paul Miller BMW in Wayne is the closest, but I have no personal experience with them and don't know if they have Z8 experience.

Nice. If you want to contact BMW of Westchester, ask for Jorge in service and tell him I mentioned you might be calling. Their Z8 specialist is John W- I forget his last name now. I would want to talk with them to make sure they would be comfortable installing this but I think they can do it. In my case, it was a long time ago and it was done by BMW NA themselves- they won't do it anymore so there's no use in asking.

I was in the shop when they started and I only had one remark....don't put to high because the hood cannot be closed ( saw some horrible pictures somewhere)

    Hi Bill,

I had the PP installed by BMW Westchester many years ago without any issues and was told they had installed many more so there should be no issues getting it done there.

Bill, how did you make out? I am in your area and need the same thing done. Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

I received the Performance Package components a couple of weeks ago, I ordered them online through bmwpartsupply.com who I have found offers the best pricing and are very responsive and helpful. I was told there were only a few of the braces available worldwide, so I snapped this one up quickly in case they became obsolete. See Ton's message above for the correct part numbers. In addition to Ton's list, I was told by the people at bmwpartsupply.com that I needed part # 33326760374 and # 31306779823 (two of each item). These are attaching hardware, I don't know for certain what they are for and whether or not they will be needed, but they were only $15.00 all together so I didn't want to chance delaying the installation.

I had what might be described as a Karma experience regarding the selection of someone to do the installation. A week or so ago my wife and I were at a surprise birthday party for a friend, and I was chatting with the boyfriend of the daughter of the birthday girl. Turns out he is a tech at BMW of Greenwich, so I mentioned I had a Z8. Without me mentioning the PP, he tells me he installed a PP on a customer's car a month or so ago. What are the odds of that? I questioned him on a few of the common concerns about the installation process, and he had the right answers. I have another friend who has used BMW Greenwich extensively, and knows the people there quite well. I asked him to call his contacts there, and he got a positive report back on this tech, and they are happy to do the installation, so I am trying to set it up for next week. They are about an hour (without traffic) from my home in Northern NJ, and will provide a free loaner car. Hopefully things will go well, I will give you a full report when it is done. I hope the Karma thing works out!

    Best,

    Bill

    Bill-

Any update on your install? I have mine at Classic BMW in Plano, TX for a PP install and to have the top re-strung and am looking forward to getting it back at the end of this week. I was very happy to hear that Pat's first impressions were that it was a very clean and well-maintained example. I purchased it in St Louis 3-4 months ago and the local dealership there that did the pre-purchase inspection sounded like they had never seen one before. I have been a little nervous to have someone in the know look at it.

    Hey Dan,

Yes, I got the PP installed a couple of weeks ago at BMW of Greenwich, Ct. Things went very well, no issues with hood clearance, and the tech gave the strut towers a clean bill of health, which, while expected, was welcome news. The car drives pretty much as before, but the peace of mind of having the PP in place is well worth the money spent. Good luck with your installation, it sounds like you got yourself a great car, hope you are enjoying it as much as I am enjoying mine. As you are finding out, there are many dealerships who have never seen a Z8, so finding a good one with Z8 experience is important.
