California Owners: Opportunity for Retro License Plate

I just read about this opportunity for purchasing a retro style California license plate from either the 50's, 60's or 70's. The coolness factor for me to own a retro looking car like the Z8 with a retro license plate is too good to pass up. My top choice is a 1960's black plate with yellow lettering. The only caveat is that 7,500 plates must be pre-purchased by January 2015.

Black car... black plate... I'm sold!

I love the idea, but honestly I think my funny CA palm tree plate suits my silver car the best.

Its very cool. However, my take is the Z8 is a modern car and Id want to have a period appropriate plate. That said, black car+black plate will look gr8!

I put in my reservation for a black plate. The count on the front page shows about 5,200 reservations have been made...could make it.

The preorder threshold for production of 7,500 black CA license plates was recently met. As a result, the DMV is now initiating the production phase, which according to its website will result in the 1960's based California license plates being delivered to customers in 9 - 12 months.

I'm reasonably sure the state of California will happily cash your $50 check for a retro plate. Would your plate read Norcal?

I may regret asking, the 507 reference is clear but 401?

    Cool! I might get some.

My custom plate order was submitted years ago now… The sequence of the plate is three letters, space, followed by three numbers. So my plate should read "ONE 342" which is my subtle way of announcing this in one of 342 Z8s in jet-black/sport red.

Nice! I didn't know it wasn't "full personalized" (numbers and letters)

  19. #19
The lettering of the plate may not be that prescriptive by the DMV, the ONE 342 designation was just my attempt to be in the same spirit as the original plates from the 60's.

I received a notice in the mail today from the DMV explaining that my plates will be ready for pick up in another 8 to 12 weeks.

My first choice for a personalized plate was not available, and my backup was delivered to the DMV with a typo. Nearly 3 years after my original post I picked up my retro plates yesterday.

Wow. I figured the the black plate would be perfect on a black car. So you like to play craps, Ed? Ed, Easy 8!

It's actually good that your first choice of ONE-342 was unavailable, since we now have official database production numbers indicating there were 352.
