The Fourth Napa Drive - Sept 2012

Here starts the story of the drive. In a weeks time we'll be on the road, but today Jeff's car arrived from OK, and is now relaxing next to mine in readiness for our run up the coast.

Bring your GoPro's, Replays and whatever else, as we'll be doing some gorgeous roads, and it'll make for some great footage.

Sweet, Jeff's car arrived safe and sound!

Replay ready, walkie talkies ready and the Z8 has a full tank. Let the driving begin.

    Day 1.

Jeff & Cindy, Clive and I got to our Starbucks Valencia rendezvous just as the sun broke the horizon. The rest of the SoCal team, and Tom & Lisa arrived on schedule. After getting the walkies in sync we hit the road, climbing up the Grapevine over the San Gabriels, we dropped in the San Jaquim Valley, and headed north over the flat lands to the 58 at Buttonwillow, where we stopped for gas. Then we headed west, up out of the flat valley in the high desert, and slowly wound our way down to the coast for our next rest stop in Cambria.

The coast was fogged in, so we didn't get the usual breathtaking views on Highway 1, but we climbed above it for lunch at the Post Ranch before heading north again. In Carmel we hit traffic and thick marine layer which made the afternoon's drive a real slog, but we escaped into the mountains behind Santa Cruz for a wonderful back road blast that was interrupted by Tom & Lisa's car getting a flat. They still have their run flats, which turned out to be really handy as we were able to get them to a tire shop, but there discovered that rim damage caused the flat, so we had to leave them in Los Gatos, and make a mad dash to meet the NorCal team over at the Distillery in Moss Beach, arriving just as they were closing the kitchen!!

Here are our postcards from the road....

Looks fantastic and I'm sure there's plenty more on the road ahead! I hope Tim & Lisa's tire/rim situation doesn't keep them off the road for long. Sorry we couldn't make it this time out, but maybe next time. Good luck to all and have a great time!

Day 2 - more postcards from the road...

We left Moss Beach and headed north along the fog bound coast over the invisible Golden Gate and up to Nick's for lunch, opposite the Point Reyes peninsular. From there we went north to Jenner, and drove inland on the Russian River, out of the coastal fogs and into the sun as we climbed the over the hills to Calistoga.

    Full moon rise in Napa...

The Nikon D800E has allowed me to take you where no camera I've owned before ever could, and share with you the coming of night from the cabin of the Z8 as we head out to dinner along Napa's beautiful Silverado Drive.

    Day 3

A full day in Napa with not too much on the schedule, heaven!

We started out with an earlish drive up into the gorgeous Pope Valley with all our GoPro cameras attached and in full effect for a fast blast. After that we returned to the Cottage Inn for downloading and a Club meeting before a lazy lunch and a single vineyard trip to the smallest producer in the valley.

A huge thank you to Rifle & John!!

For planning such a simply fantastic weekend, and our final dinner together was a superb grand finale at the Chateau Montelena, a spot that is almost impossible to arrange a private event at.

Thank you both for an incredible weekend!!!

Hey guys, Renate and I play this silly game before and after we go on vacations. Before we go, it's next week at this time... after we return, it's last week at this time... Well, last week at this time I was getting fortune cookies in China Town and the rest of you were on your way to Napa, via the Golden Gate Bridge vista point.

The mad photographer at work. Props to the workers at Chateau Montelena for recognizing that we needed a little elevation to grab the group shot.

No Z8s were harmed in the taking of any photos on the trip. Er, sorta...Tom?

The pano from Montelena is actually two separate panos merged as I had a clean foreground in one shot and a great mid/sky (but someone walked across the frame). I was sure the two different projections wouldn't mesh, but Photoshop worked its alien magic once again.

Have you seen the new shots the DPR guys did with the RX1 around San Francisco? It's dumbfounding that it's that small and so good. Leica should be terrified.

I saw the Steve Huff shots in SF, really promising - it's a great sensor and a great lens - the only downside is I'm saving up for the new Canon EOS 1S (47MP) and the new 24-70, together they'll be $11k, so not to keen on any costly 'toy' purchases until I see what exactly that Canon has to offer.

Indeed! But Canon are saying its a development model, so it'll be maybe 12-18 months till it's actually out, by which time my D800's will be needing refreshing anyway.

I'm hoping that Sony nabs Olympus' crazy image stabilization system from the OMD as part of their investment. I have a enough pixels, but I could use a few more stops here and there.

    Napa '13

Andrew, Looks to be a wonderful outing, with many great folks. We lived in Napa numerous times over the years and the wine country is one of our favorite places. Now that I'm back in the Z8 family, my wife and I will look forward to next year's event, if invited.

    Grills in the mist

Just a couple iphone snaps from the B&B parking lot in the early coastal mist. I really love the silver grills against black. And the "Frosty" white headlights and windscreen.

What great pictures of what appears to be a great time.

Did you guys wash your cars before all the pictures? They look so good!

Are the two red cars wearing the same wheels?

California looks so fantastic for car guys. The scenery, weather, roads (by that I mean winding and elevation changes while taking in scenery and sun) Soon, our states will be the same economically and politically and there will be no downside to packing up and moving down.

Michael, you should have come along - we shipped to LA and drove up to Napa and then the rest of the way back to Seattle.

Although, for Norcal's photos we actually spent that night in Los Gatos fixing a broken wheel!

That looks so dang fun, I just might have to make it a priority for next year. The Ford GT group has a rally every year about the same time and rumor has it it will be a private session at Sears point or Laguna Seca (if they can get the necessary noise waivers). Choices.....

I remembered your incidence with the wheel. Those roads looked mostly decent. That can lull me into a false sense of security.

What a great event. Did anyone stress about leaving their car out overnight? I am a worry wort.

The Cottage Inn was worry-free parking, with designated parking stalls including some just outside your room. Rifle had previously stayed there, and he made a great recommendation.
