    Battery replaced; Navigation gone...?

After 10 (!) years my original battery finally died.... Because weather was bad and job is simple I did not take the Z8 to the dealer and replaced the battery myself (with OEM BMW battery). When I got into the car I saw that the head unit did not show the 'navigation' submenu (rest is working fine). I also noticed that the navigation cd diskdrive keeps spinning every 20 seconds. The (red) power led is NOT on... Could it be that the MK3 navigation computer has to be reset? Take it to the dealer? Thoughts anyone?

I replaced my battery last year without experiencing these symptoms. Have you ejected the GPS CD and recycled the radio system with the disk out? With the disk in? Apparently GPS takes priority over the other systems of the radio/CD/Phone head unit.

    Hope that helps!

No I changed it with the CD in place.... I just pulled out one battery cable and waited for about 10 minutes; did not work....

    Clarification on earlier post

I wasn't suggesting that the battery replacement be performed with the GPS CD removed, I meant now that the head unit is displaying the symptoms you've described.

I tried it both, does not make any difference. Just got off the phone with a local navigation specialist; he told me that there is a piece of (flash) software inside the unit that does not write/read correctly when voltage is very high (jump starting) or very low (dead battery). He advised me to send the unit because (reset the ROM and replace cd-drive) he claims BMW will tell that the complete unit will have to be replaced. Learning every day.....

I had a dead head unit when I replaced the battery. I pulled all fuses including the one on the back side of the radio without any success. My dealer adviced to disconnect the battery for a long time and then try again. I had mine disconnected for a couple of days and - hard to believe - everything was working properly.

Your issue sounds different but it's worth trying.

Good luck and regards from Germany

Thank you Klaus! Battery died out of the blue (one of 6 cells gone...) Perhaps Navigational unit was the cause of it instead of the result of replacement....

I connected the battery again today but unfortunately the trick did not work...
When the weather gets better I'll stop by the BMW direct service to have it checked, I will let you guys know.

Mine did too, now I also experience some kind of radio problem. Went through the forum and radio problems look pretty common... Wonder if you also have found a solution to your problem?

Short answer: reach out to BMWNA for potential financial relief and then order a reconditioned radio

Long answer: removed the radio, checked the fuse, checked the connections, had a radio shop check electrical circuits (soldier cracks) and then see above...

Not yet, BMW 'direct service' over here seems not so direct after all, have to make an appointment (technicians want to reset the navigation computer; a 2 hour procedure...) will keep you posted. Btw; I have not experienced radio problems yet!

OK, just got the car back (serviced) got a thumbs up regarding state it is in.
BMW techs found out that the navigation computer is broken. Recommendation is to replace it (BMW part nr 65.90.6920183). Price of this unit: 2000 euro's excl taxes and installation. Without any question from my side the BMW sales person informed me that there are spare units in the market, if I could get one installing it by BMW would cost about 400-500 euro's. Guess I have to look out for one

Take it for what it's worth, but I'd suggest all owners pull their working units to keep the parts for future "OE completeness" and install an aftermarket unit with modern features. The original radio and nav fails very commonly, and it's really a dog on usability. I fully get the desire to keep the car factory, but I like the idea of putting the working units in storage (no guarantee they're work later either) and enjoy the latest and breast at considerably less cost.

About the only thing you lose is the outside temperature monitor, but then again, with the top always down, I already have a good gauge on that.

Because I really like the Z to stay completely original I searched for and found a MK3 unit about 25 miles away; I will go there next saturday and have it swapped. The unit (former 2001 730d unit) costs 275 euro's.

I drove to a local BMW specialist today (who btw told me that the MK3 unit is a special Z8-type). The guy told me that it was not the battery replacement that killed my navigation computer/unit. He has seen a lot of dead MK3 units, in most cases caused by jump-starting the car (!). Is everyone aware of this 'weakness' or shall we post a warning on the forum?

That is great information - love to hear more, and I'll ask Matt at Peter Pan here too if it's a common occurrence on US cars.

I believe there's a fuse in the back of the unit which should stop this.

Should work, but I guess it is the 'slow type' or maybe the frequency of the current during jump starting is causing it (like 'clipping' with speakers).

OK, I took the Z to the electronics specialist yesterday and had the completely renewed navigation computer installed; it worked within seconds! The only thing we had to wait for was a GPS fix, but after 2 minutes this also was working fine.
The guys told me that the Z8 MK3 computer is a different one than the normal MK3 computer. The problem is not repairing the unit, but testing it. It could be that the software versions of the car and the unit are not communicating; and in that case it will not work at all. Costs of this repair: 500 euro's. And I like the fact that I still have my original navigation computer, only with a new 'inside'

That is great news, and very cool, do you have more specific details of the repair?

I took out the complete unit (cdrom-drive) and handed it to the specialist. It was then shipped within the Netherlands to another (dutch) specialist. My contact told me that the job was too difficult for him, so he sent it to a german electronics specialist (FT concept KFZ elektronicreparaturen). The supposedly took apart the whole drive and put in a complete new drive and print. I have a 1 year guarantee; I will let you guys know how it goes.
