Soft top straps have lost tension

Dropped the car off for a exhaust sensor replacement and asked the dealer to look at the top. When I put it up, it keeps going and strikes the windershield header, rather than stopping an inch above it like it used to.

They tell me the soft top straps have lost tension and cannot be adjusted any further. My recourse is to replace the straps which will require a new headliner and $1400 of parts. Has anyone else seen this problem? The car is an early 2000 which I have owned since new.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thaks,
    Carter

I have not heard of this as yet, either the issue or their suggested solution.

Thanks. If you haven't heard of it, I suspect I'm the first. I think we may live with this one for a while. The top stays down most of the time!

Carter, thats annoying. I had a tear occur in my top and they replaced it and asked me if I kept the top down a lot and I said yes, I put it down and keep it down until its time to be washed and they told me thats not the recommended way. The top is designed to be kept under tension. So it should go up every night.

I hate to have to put it up all the time. I much prefer looking at the car with the top down!

When I get around to correcting this problem, I guess I will have to start keeping the top up.

    Thanks for the info.

Some time you can shorten the straps a little. We do it at the on other tops like the E36 convertible. Where the strap mounts to the rear bow just remove the rivots and pull on the strap about 10mm. Then rivot back down. Never done it on a Z8 but it should work for now.

I believe this is why the Club has recommended keeping the top up but not latched when the car is not in use.

They have not been able to explain to me the not latched part. The top repair specialist I had work on my car told me to put it up and make sure its under tension (aka latched). I have not deviated from this for several years with no ill effects.

Thanks, Machinegun. I will get my shop to give this a try the next time the car is in for service. I will report back on the efficacy of the solution.
