San Francisco Chronicle 6 March 2011

    Dear Fellow Z8 Enthusiasts,

I recently submitted an article for publication in the Sunday San Francisco Chronicle about my passion for sports cars and especially for my recently purchased BMW Z8. I've attached a PDF file of this write up that was published today. An online version of the story can also be found at the Chronicle's website, and more pictures should be available there later this week. The photo shoot was at Crissy Field last Sunday. I was told there was a backlog of "My Ride" stories for publication, so you can imagine my excitement and surprise in seeing the story in today's paper.

    Lovely piece, good for you.

How are the roads up there? After this winters rains, and the budget short cuts the roads down here are coming apart, and they just aren't fixing them. Sadly it makes every drive more of a challange than a joy in a car like ours.

Well done. Although, your taste in colors is questionable.

Way to go. The Bay area is a great place to own a Z8 for sure.

This is the only online version I found. I'm guessing that they don't display the photos without a subscription.

The My Ride link above from thegunguy now contains 21 pictures of the Z8 taken by photographer Stephen Finerty. He spent at least 2 hour taking over 200 pictures of the Z8.

Ed, I note from the pictures it looks like you are driving on the Bridgestone run flat tires that came with the car. And you do not have the Performance Package installed. I'm sure you don't want to spend a bunch of extra money now, but I strongly advise you to at a minimum replace the tires with a non run flat tire such as the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 (they are available in the stock wheel size). The Z8's strut towers are not the strongest. The only way to address a deformed shock tower is not like in a steel frame car where you cut it out- on the Z8 its part of the aluminum frame member. You would have to replace the entire frame member. Tires are cheap insurance. I would still argue you get the performance package installed which serves as added protection. You can read a lot more in the frame forum. Don't get too freaked out, any car (or machine for that matter) will have its weak points.

The Z8 is a true modern classic, welcome to the black/red club.

You should contact Dana Caldwell at Peter Pan BMW asap to get the full info on protecting your aluminum chassis, he really is the top Z8 specialist in the country, and he's on your doorstep too.

If I'm not mistaken, Ed's car was at Peter Pan when mine was there in for belts and hoses.

The MPS2s are really the way to go for the OE wheel for many reasons.

I am fortunate to have the expertise of Dana Caldwell and his team at Peter Pan BMW to help maintain my car. I'm currently working through the various systems on the Z8 (cooling hoses/tank, fluid changes, front suspension bushing etc), and I spoke to Matt at Peter Pan about the Performance Package last week. I plan to hold onto my dream car, so I've been diligent about getting ahead of potential issues.

I appreciate the feedback and support of this forum!
