    Some light in the gloom

There is so much to stay on top of at the moment with the domestic and world economy in such a mess, and there are times when I feel completely overwhelmed trying to stay on top of all the economic news so I can attempt to make at least some wise decisions. Now and again I have to get away from it, to clear my head a little before diving back into storm. So I thought we should start a thread where we can read or watch a little something to smile about during all the gloom. How about this:

What a great tale - we need to send Mr Beale out on AA! I'm 4 million miles into my relationship with them, and the food they serve, occasionally, has got so bad that it isn't worth accepting it anymore, Pegah & I feed up before the flights and take snacks, its the only way to fly these days!

Yea, thank God for Cinnabon and Burger King.

Actually, UAL has a decent deli pack / box lunch for 7 bucks. All packaged stuff and pretty tasty. But then I drink Mr. and Mrs. T's outta the can so my taste buds are pretty numb by the time the snack cart rolls around.

On the flip side, I once flew 1st Class on KLM from Amsterdam to Khartoom and they brought out a tray of Filet Mignon and asked how we wanted them cooked. I don't think that there is a restaurant in my town that let's you select your cut and specify how you want it prepared. Oh yea, a full size bottle of wine was brought to each table.

Guilty! Kings Rd was home in '77, and since I was tied into the Westwood posse I was by facto on the fringes, in the drainpipes & Doc Martens! I love the ad, but boy does he look old - damn, and he's our age too!

I know we're getting a little Anglocentric here, but the Brits do have the best ads in the world.

Liverpool Street, over near the City. It was built as the hub of the old Great Eastern Railway (GER), whose main line was to Norfolk, but they served the whole of east Anglia. After WW1's dire financial crisis that left most of the railways in, or on the verge of ruin, it was absorbed in the LNER (London North Eastern Railway) during the 'grouping' that was imposed by the then government to keep the nation's railways working.

If they are files you have then email them to me and I'll pop them up for you, but a lot of streaming content has an 'Embed' tab on it, you just hit that, copy the body of text that comes up, and paste it into the message window here.

A little number crunching that provides a ray of funshine during dark times.

If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you will have $49.00 today. If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you will have $33.00 today. If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you will have $0.00 today. But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund, you will have received $214.00. Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 401-Keg.

A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year and drinks 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means that, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon, makes you proud to be an American!

Once upon a time a man appeared in a village and announced to the
villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.

The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to
the forest and started catching them.

The man bought thousands at $10 and, as supply started to diminish,
the villagers stopped their effort. He next announced that he would
now buy monkeys at $20 each. This renewed the efforts of the villagers
and they started catching monkeys again.

Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back
to their farms. The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of
monkeys became so scarce it was an effort to even find a monkey, let
    alone catch it!

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50 each! However,
since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would
buy on his behalf. In the absence of the man, the assistant told the
villagers: "Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has
already collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man
returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each."

The villagers rounded up all their savings and bought all the monkeys
for 700 billion dollars. They never saw the man or his assistant again, only lots and lots of monkeys!

Now you understand the Wall St bailout plan.

Taken from one of the more serious blogs...

    JUST A POEM

With all the rumors, I am afraid to trust my bank
Is it one of those that's going to tank?
We have always been told that they are safe as can be
Yet, I don't know if mine will turn into a zombie
There are calls from experts to nationalize
But will this be done before mine dies?
The banking industry sure has changed in a very short time
In fact, my dollars are hardly worth a dime
What do we do, who do we trust?
Is seems the whole country is going to go bust
I guess the good news is oil prices are down
But the bad is I'm working part time as a clown
Each night I wonder if this mess will be solved by Obama
Or will I have to move back home with my mama.
    It is now February 2009
And I don'think we have much more time
So I will muster up a new measure of faith and hope,
But please, Mr. President, don't play me as a dope.
For if our leaders lead us into doom,
Their last trip will be a one-way ticket to the moon!

    That Congress 'info pack'...

came from an online mag called Capitol Hill Blues, here is a link to the original piece published back in 1999 - a full decade ago - where does it go! A journalist friend is digging into this to see how much of it is true today!

Clive, you are the fourth person to say I look like the captain. Hey, if someone gives me a thumbs up and says good job, I guess I will play along. On a different note, for those of you who haven't already seen or heard this worldwide sensation, go to You Tube and search "Susan Boyle." She competed on Britain's Got Talent. She is rather frumpy, but wait until you hear her sing. She blew everyone away. Well worth watching!
