Great article, the only part they left out is that by the time they figure out how to make cars that do what they want neurologically the government will have mandated that they all have chips in them to control, limit or spy on your driving habits, removing all pleasure from motoring. One side effect is that it might make our 'old' cars even more valuable!

My favorite story comes from the early 1950's when Ford was offered VW dirt cheap. Their response was a polite "no, thank you" for they could see "no potential market for the car in the United States". Keep in mind that at the time the Ford product planners were busy working on the car that 200,000 Americans would be clamoring for in 1958 -- the Edsel.

The whole Porsche/VAG tale is a wonderfully twisted family saga too, and pretty lucky for Porsche that the managed to buy out VAG right as all the cars they make stop selling. Long live the Rabbit!

Did you hear that Volvo trucks sales in the EU went from 150,000+ units in Sept 07 to 145 units in Sept 08, and Mercedes Benz is closing it's entire factory in Germany for the whole month of December!

Even if Detroit get a slice of the bailout can they actually build something anyone want to buy?

    Crazy times indeed!
