    Wire Wheels

Was wondering if anyone has every put a set of wire wheels on their Z8? I like the look of the old Austin Healey's and I think a set of wires on the Z8 would be a great retro look to finish off what the factory started.

Is there a great brand (with knock offs), can they withstand the torgue and weight, etc.?

Any lessons learned, suggestions, comments, or pics would be welcomed.

I spoke at length to the technical team at Dayton Wire Wheels and they said they do not sell wire wheels for cars exceeding a certain hp, I think it was 275, but it has been a couple of years since I went through that. The reason is that our car has enough power to tear the spokes clean out of the rims on a full power launch, so for liability etc there was no way they would even consider it. I never pursued it after that, though I too though spoke would be a nice touch, which is in part why I went for the multi-spoke BMW Motorsport rims, they have a spoke look to them.

I may have seen wires on some high HP hot rods and trucks, but they are very different from what you might imagine...short stout spokes etc. As for Knock-offs, that would be nearly impossible because it would involve changing the axle hubs. Could be cool though! Something like this?

    Oh no...not another wheel option!

Just when I was thinking of doing the new brake kit and going back to stock wheels. Maybe a quick photoshop of the car with wire wheels?

Take a second look, and think how hard that would be to clean!!!

All good comments, I will look into the Dayton wheel as this would be an option for shows and not flat out racing. I agree the torque is fantastic on these machines, and I have been known to let is loose.

Also, I just recently went to a car show in Richmond VA (Classic on the James) for European cars and took 1st place in the BMW class. The show has a lot of ferrari, jags, lams, etc even an Allard. Lot of fun and still small enough to be on grass in the middle of the river.

Congrats to briandilley for the car show win. I did the same this year at the Pacific Grove Rally. It say's something about the Z8.

Just MHO about the spoke rims: in '72, I had them on my MGB and they were a PITA to clean.

One concern with wire rims, besides the cleaning issue, keeping the wheels balanced. I know that Jaguar XKE's from the 60's and the MG's from the 50's had issues with getting all the "wires" at the same tension, thereby keeping them balanced. Obviously this wouldn't be an issue if they were faux wire wheels. Just some food for thought.

In a past life I sold a number of vehicles to car dealers that we put wire wheels on and with some of the wheel cleaners available today they really were easy to keep clean. But I prefer the factory wheels for mine.

I do have pics, however the edit tool is looking for a URL. There isn't a way to directly upload the pics?

So I am bringing back this thread to see since 2008 if there are any wire wheels available now for our Z8's? It seems like everyone is going with the BMW 20 inch motor sport wheels which look very nice.
