    clunk in front end

Today I went for a drive to the New Canaan cars and carburators and encountered a new problem. On hard right sweepers I get a speed dependent clunking from the front drivers side wheel as that side loads the suspension. During normal turns or straights no problem. The car has 35,000 miles, just had the bushings done about 3000 miles ago, the wheel is tight and I can't rock it as it sits in the parking lot. Ball joint? thoughts? BTW the show featured two other Z8s(silver with black, both 2001s) as well as two Bauer convertables (a 1600 and a 2002 factory) plus four 3.0 Cs coupes. There were over 400 cars in attendence.

My first though would be bushing or bearings too, but it could be something in the steering rack too.

Did you take any pictures of the day, it sounds like a good one?

My initial thought was loose lug nuts and I'd check those first after jaqcking it up and taking the weight off the wheel, but you said you checked those already. Other than that, and the things you and Macfly already mentioned, could it be something really bizarre like loose bolts on the pp (if you have that), caster plates, broken/loose engine mounts, or headers coming in contact with something? Gotta consider all the unexpected things that can experience slight movement during turns/Gs if you've ruled out the usual suspects. Let us know when you find it as I'm confident you will.

I've had this after the PP was installed. They took the car back in and tightened something and it went away.

    Josh,

Did you ever determine what the clunking was?

Yes I started to get a slight rub between the inside of the rim and the shock tower. A dremel and and a disc to remove about 1/32 over a three inch radius where I had a rim repair did the trick. The tolerances with the wider HREs are pretty tight.

    Great!!

My issue is a subtle knocking you can feel (not hear) in the steering wheel when traveling over small bumps in the road or maybe through a parking lot. Worse turning but present always even at speed (but faster speeds just increase the cycle rate of the knock and hence somewhat less noticeable). I thought this might be the thrust bushings and/or upper control arm bushings but full inspection shows no obvious bushing or ball joint issues in the front end so not sure what my problem might be. No obvious rubbing either. Any suggestions? (I am at 60K miles - original 2003)
    Best Regards,

    Jeff

    Hey Josh,

Noticed you have a Supersprint exhaust -- can you post a video / audio of how it sounds sometime when you get a chance?

I would still suspect a rub if you are not using stock rims due to your discription. Mine showed up as 5 by 10 mm shiny spot on the tower and the rim. Maybe put some chalk on the inside rim drive a little and see if it transfers?

It's in one of the threads with me dragging a Lambo gallardo STS. I can't remember which one. Ah found it in the thread " any one know which exhaust this is"
