    Anyone else have this problem?

I was on my way home from the northern NJ Cars & Croissants this morning and experience a bit of a problem that perhaps others might have run into. As I was accelerating fairly hard onto the highway in 2nd gear, I suddenly felt the car lurch and lose power. The SES light came on, and the car felt like it was running on 6 cylinders. I only had a few miles to my exit, so I continued along, watching the temperature gauge and listening for any other untoward symptoms. Once off the highway, I pulled off to the side and lifted the hood, could not see anything unusual, but the car was clearly running on something less than all 8. I drove another mile or so, then decided to shut the car off on the slight hope that whatever it was would reset and things would go back to normal. Thankfully, this is exactly what happened, and so I continued on home without further event. The car now seems to be running normally with full power.

My guess it was some kind of electronic glitch. Anyone experience this before? There was no smoke, no overheating, no symptoms other than loss of power (with accompanying rough running, similar to what one typically experiences on a car with one or more cylinders not firing)

What you experienced was "limp home mode". Often, just restarting the car will clear it. It is a common problem if your gas cap is not sealed (on) properly. Did you get gas recently?

Also can be the first sign of the 02 sensors or the MAF's going bad. Well worth getting the fault code read by your local specialist (or Peak reader if you have one).

I had the same experience last year: lost power and it did not came back. After diagnostics it seemed an actuator which signals the valves (part # 13 63 7 840 383)
    Changing both fixed the problem

Yes, Andrew, I have also gotten this problem when exhaust camm sensors were going bad. I seem to recall.

It's ironic that our engines really are uber-reliable, but the silly sensors that monitor them are the things always going wrong!

Yes, not the reliable, old nuts and bolts stuff! Plastic, glue, and electronics.

The same thing happened to me this morning on my way to Cars and Coffee. Two blocks from the house and a couple of hiccups from the motor (no SES or other warning lights) after that the car ran great the rest of the day.
