    AGM battery

Anyone using an AGM battery in their car? Any reason not to do so? Thanks in advance.

I do know that one of our long departed owners used an Odyssey battery in his, primarily to save weight, but also for ease of use & service life, but he sold his car a while back, and not sure he'd had the battery in long enough so see a longevity advantage. I don't remember there being any issues with it.

Thanks for the input so far.

By way of context, the impetus for the question was research on the use of AGM batteries in our cars, which among other things turned up this thread: http://www.bmwz8.us/forum/bmw-z8-cha...tion-4402.html Comments therein are contradictory regarding whether Z8s require "battery registration" or not, particularly after a switch in the type of battery (lead-acid to AGM). It appears that it is required (?) on later model cars, variously defined as post-2002 or post-2006, depending on the source.

A few interesting tidbits as well... The thread mentioned above has a lengthy quote (from post #1), which is perhaps replicated from one or the other of these sites: https://munichmotorsport.com/service...-registration/ OR https://atlanticmotorcar.com/casestu...replacement-2/ They both specify that registration applies to BMWs beginning with the 2002 7-series.

And, for those wishing to perform battery registration at home, at a discount from the dealership, this site offers that (for cars "after 2002" or "2002 or newer" depending on which statement on the site you believe): https://www.bimmer-tech.net/blog/ite...d-registration

I'm seeking to replace my lead-acid battery with an AGM. To date, I've always used lead-acid with a battery tender. My car is driven infrequently, yet I'm soon to be on my 4th battery in 10 years, which seems ridiculous. I'm considering an AGM Interstate battery (https://www.interstatebatteries.com/...-bmw-z8-v850l#) and my tender/charger (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CD44RQO...roduct_details) set to AGM.

Any additional thoughts and ideas are welcome. Thanks again.

I am a bit skeptical regarding battery “registration.” Please explain the rational for this service. Thanks

The relevant links in my previous post all explain the rationale for battery registration.

Thanks,I was too lazy to study it. My dealer did describe the rational for the battery registration but I don’t quite buy into it.

I might switch to the 34R next time. It’s 10lbs heavier than the PC1200 but it has 300 more Cold Cranking Amps.

the PC1200 seems to work fine but once in a while, I get the dreaded starter click. Maybe 10 extra pounds and 850 CCA’s will prevent that? Plus, 49 lbs is still a lot lighter than the OEM lead acid battery.

I also have a 1500 Cold Cranking Amp lithium battery that I bought for my FGT but it’s too tall. I might try that.

    It’s super lightweight at 22lbs.
