    Leaky valve cover gaskets?

Just brought my car in for annual oil change. The mechanic pointed out that the valve cover gaskets appear to be leaking. I saw it myself and there is some residue outside of the gaskets on both sides. Did some research on the M5 boards since I could not find anything on this forum. Some people describe it as "weeping", and it not a big deal to leave it alone. I am inclined to have it done, the car after all is 14 years old but only 13,500 mile on the odo. Has anyone had their valve cover gaskets replaced? What was the cost? Is this a common occurance? Any input would be appreciated.

I had mine done at 55,000 miles in 2008. The parts were $141.06 and labor $683.52. Total $824.58.

I had the valve cover gaskets replaced on my Z8 a couple of years back. Cannot remember the cost, but it wasn't enough to make me think twice about having the work performed.
