Thread: Z8 Models

    Z8 Models

I've been slowly collecting Z8 models, mostly on EBay, for the past couple of years. Here are some of the models that caught my eye, they are all nice, but the big Kyosho 1/12 scale one is the only one that is a 'must have'. They make it in silver, shown here, and black.

Please join in with any great models you find.

I'm also collecting Z8 models and I was wondering if Kyosho made special models, like the stratus/red one I bought from the z8 club. I currently own those two models in 1:18 scale :

And I'm waiting for the black/crema one in scale 1:12 that I bought online last weekend.

I believe that it was Kyosho that made all the models for BMW, though I'm not sure if there's anything on them saying that on the models. You can see the full color set in this link.

The 1:18 BMW models were made by kyosho. The "owner" models distinguishes itself from the "commercial models" by having a hardtop instead of he soft top the commercial Kyosho's have. Having said that there are two exceptions: the red/black version and the "grey version. Both have a hardtop:the first with a "simple" window and the latter with the "right" window. My theory is that the latter is a owner model that was made in the wrong color ( it looks very much as stratos grey ) and was "commercialized" as the "Individual Z8"

I am interested in purchasing 1:12 Kyosho. How many were made and what is a reasonable price at the present time? Detail is amazing!

The Models are not "numbered" but are quite rare. Most offered is the James Bond Model (silver black) with rockets and BMW logo between the seats. Prize is around $250/300. Now and than you see the black/red offered ( price range between $300-400. 2 weeks ago I saw a black/cream offered for 700 ! Also very rare is the Topaz/Crema and the silver black without all rockets etc (about $600)

There is a silver red on ebay presently for $979. Seems quite high.

  12. #12
Check out Kyosho's front page, of all the cars they could have used they used ours! That said it seems they don't have a Z8 in their stock list, so I guess it really is EBay.

I added screengrabs of the two on EBay as they are both quite unusual pieces. The Silver/Red says only 50 made, no idea if thats true or not.

I don't think that's all of them. My car came with a red/sport red model and the red model pictured in that link appears to have a black interior.

I understood that the Z8 club bought the cars from BMW that were not issued to the original owners (The dealer had to buy the car from BMW but should give it to the customer as a gift) so this will probably part of the full set.

I think that's right, they got what was left, and I bought a full set of what they had, but I guess I'm missing a few too, but honestly I never unpacked mine, they're all still in the shipping box in the attic!

On the subject of models. Alex from mDiecast just emailed me with the info of his company, which has a huge selection of models, including almost every Z8 I've seen come up on EBay over the years, so if you're looking for anything in the minature market this is a good place to start. mDiecast.com - Online Store and Diecast Model Encyclopedia (then enter a search for BMW Z8 on the home page).

    Here's his full info.....

Is there any particular Z8 diecast model that is recognized as being the most accurate in proportions, details, etc? I have a Kyosho 1:18 scale Red/Sport Red car which I think is very nicely done, and is color matched to my real car (an interesting choice for Kyosho, since there were only 77 real cars produced in this combination, or about 1.3% of the total). Aside from Kyosho, I see Franklin Mint has a red Z8, but the interior is a kind of weird tan/red combo that I question was ever produced. Maisto makes a decent inexpensive version, but lacks in the finer details.

For me Kyosho is the best in 1:12/1:18. Autoart is second for me and in 1:43 Minichamps is the winner

I've been searching Ebay but have not had any luck finding a topaz/crema model. Did the die cast companies ever make this particular color combo? Thanks.

  24. #24
I feel fairly certain that I've seen one in that combo in the 1/18th scale at some point, but not so sure about the 1/12 scale.

I'm not a model car collector at all, except for Z8 models of course, but this new model from CMC is just such a stunning piece that I simply had to have it. Sorry if it leads you into temptation, but I couldn't not share such a beautiful thing with you guys.

Maybe we can persuade CNC to do a matching 507-Z8 pair :-)

That is sweet! I have that without the numbers... Along with a bunch of the the older auto unions and silver arrows etc. the best models by far.

IMO CMC is the best of all commercial car modelmakers! Their skills are best shown on the models like the Maserati Birdcage with its filigran bodywork. Unfortunately CMC has never build a BMW. Their new line is now the Aston Martin but who knows :-)

Andrew if you are interested in this -out of production- Renntransporter to complete your purchase :-) ...just let me know.

The engine bay detail is amazing. Too bad they can't come up with a more realistic replication of the hood hinges. This seems to be a problem with most of the diecast cars.

And if you'd like something rather ugly in your Z8-model collection, here are two opportunities for one-of-a-kind pieces:

The gal who hand painted these models picked two well know themes, NY and Apple, that will likely result in a sale. Clever design, but not for me. Kinda reminds me of the Volkswagen Golf Harlequin.

Perhaps an attempt at a miniature Z8 Art Car, a BMW tradition? (I am trying to be kind here, one of my New Year's resolutions)

Thank you very much @z-acht @boomster. Wish there was a scale like 1:5
That would fit nice in between the actual car and 1:12.

A year or two ago I stumbled across a children's electric ride-on Z8 that was probably about that scale. Kinda wish I had bought it, but was fearful of getting the old "what on earth are you going to do with that!" from my wife. She's pretty tolerant about my car addiction, but there are limits......!
