Z8 EU & US versus TOTAL PRODUCTION by color? (and year?)

Are the US production/import numbers available by color and/or year (including Alpina exterior/interior combos)?

Is there a break-down by color (and year) for EU totals and US totals of the Z8 and Z8 Alpina, respectively?

To clarify... What I'm looking for is the US totals of Z8 and Z8 Alpina by color (and by year, if available).

I don't think I've ever seen that... Would be nice, but not so easy perhaps!

I don't believe that break down exists anywhere, except maybe at the factory, and they never release their records.

Speaking of the factory not releasing records, I went to the BMWarchive.org site to see if there was a way to answer WYD OPn's question through that source, and it appears to have been shut down. This has been a great place to get the factory build information for all BMWs, it would be a shame to lose it.

Indeed, it seems to be difficult data to acquire.

I was hopeful; but if this community doesn't have that info, then I'd presume it isn't available.

Is the overall breakdown for US exterior colors available? I've seen several scattered references to total US numbers of certain colors, but didn't retain the info as I was reading through some threads.

I'd gladly jump through whatever hoops required to track down the info from BMW NA.

Here are the break downs for both EU and US cars. Titles are in Turkish but you can still get the info. I have lots of info regarding Z8 production data. I am planning to create a website dedicated to Z8 registry with all these info but never had the time. Some day I will.

I think Hattat and I have the same problem: time! I already own one year this URL "BMWZ8.EU" but until now I did not write a letter.

Exactly. I own z8registry.com and lots of paper work is waiting for me to be handed over to the webmaster.

    WOW. Amazing info. THANX!

Is there a way to correlate that data for exterior and interior color quantities per year, and to distinguish Z8 from Z8 Alpina with all the numbers?

For example... How many 2003 Black/Red-Black Z8 Alpinas for the US; and how many 2002 Red/Crema Z8s for the US, etc.?

Again, thanks for the excellent information.

Is there any way to know with any accuracy how many Z8's remain in the US?

If as you indicate you are willing to jump through hoops to get the exterior/interior color breakdown, I think I have a way for you to get it but it will involve time and drudgery. Go to the bmwarchive.org website, and click on the "VIN" tab, which will take you to a link called "bimmer.work. By entering the last six digits of a car's VIN, you can get the build sheet data on any BMW, including the interior and exterior color, the date of manufacture, and the various accessories that came with the car. U.S. spec cars carried the final six alphanumeric sequence of AH6000 through AH 62542 representing all 2543 cars built for the US market. If you are willing to invest the time to do this search 2543 times, you will have your answer.

If indeed you pull this information together, I hope you will share it with the entire forum. Good luck!

Correction: you must enter the final seven digits (not six), and the starting VIN for Z8s was AH60000, not AH6000. Note to self: proofread BEFORE hitting the "post" button!

Indeed I am willing to do that, and will commence immediately. This is exactly the head-start info I needed to begin such a project, even though it will take some time.

And yes, I will gladly share the summarized info on the forum. Thanks for the heads up. I would never have known exactly where to start otherwise.

Sadly, I can't imagine how one would ever determine the number of the 2,543 US Z8s that have been exported, unless one had access to the US Customs database or an equivalent source.

Now preparing the exterior/interior color combo for EU cars. As soon as it is ready I will post it here. If you subtract it from the total run you will reach US cars.

Very nice. Will this breakdown distinguish Z8 from Z8 Alpina by color combos?

That is true: I checked the first 230 EU cars and almost all of them are press cars, dealer presentations cars, exhibition cars etc. Also the
first 82 are pre-production cars. Let see when the real production starts.

A few of these totals are different than the numbers previously provided. But since these appear to be direct prints from the BMW database for dealers, I'm adjusting all previous numbers to these you've provided.

Thanks again, and I eagerly await the Alpina numbers as well.

I've been using a custom user title of "One of 342" to acknowledge my black/red Z8 was one of the 342 produced in that color scheme, but now it appears that it's one of 352 (i.e., 161 EU + 191 US cars). And that's before factoring in Alpinas in that color scheme... Tell me again why there is this discrepancy in the values?

Evidently, this is the correct information straight from the BMW database. Many previous totals are correct, confirmed by this new data.

My speculation (and that's all it is for now) is that the slightly higher production numbers above for a few color combos include cars previously reported as Individual interior units. And the Alpina numbers were likely previously reported as included in earlier standard Z8 totals, but they're in addition to those totals.

Here is a comparison of the previously reported combined EU/US production number totals with the new data provided by zed8 above.

Totals on the left are from above as EU / US / ALL, with the previous reported numbers in parentheses to the right and +/- totals.

    EU / US / TOTAL
    91 / 23 / 114 .... STRATUS // BLACK (114) even
    10 / 2 / 12 .... STRATUS // RED-BLACK (12) even
    30 / 16 / 46 .... STRATUS // CREMA (46) even
    14 / 9 / 23 .... STRATUS // CREMA-BLACK (23) even
    1 / 0 / 1 .... STRATUS // INDIVIDUAL INTERIOR (1) even
    146 / 50 / 196 .... TOTAL (196) even

    92 / 47 / 139 .... RED // BLACK (137) +2
    38 / 38 / 76 .... RED // RED-BLACK (77) -1
    13 / 48 / 61 .... RED // CREMA (62) -1
    5 / 10 / 15 .... RED // CREMA-BLACK (15) even
    3 / 0 / 3 ... RED // INDIVIDUAL INTERIOR (0) -3
    148 / 143 / 291 .... TOTAL (291) even

    120 / 23 / 143 .... TOPAZ // BLACK (135) +8
    5 / 3 / 8 .... TOPAZ // RED-BLACK (8) even
    50 / 87 / 137 .... TOPAZ // CREMA (138) -1

The Stratus quantities are identical between previous data and zed8's new accurate info.
The Red total quantities are identical, with only slight differences in individual color totals.
The Topaz quantities are slightly different, with the total slightly increased.
The Titanium quantities are slightly higher, but only for Black and Red-Black interior quantities.
The Black quantities are all slightly higher for each interior color.
The new data also shows no Red cars with Individual interior colors.

The overall standard color totals are only up by a combined total of 51 units. But the new data also reports fewer Individual totals at 73, versus the previous quantity of 124. There's the 51 unit overall discrepancy.

I know the previous totals came from the Z8 Club, but I don't know the original source. Zed8's data is a direct print from BMW's database, so I'm inclined to adjust all previous preported numbers to his data from the above pdf.

A further thought would be that the additional 51 cars previously reported as Indivudal quantities were indeed ordered as Indivudal units, but for other optional inclusions rather than exterior or interior color.

The overall production totals match from zed8's data with previous reported total production numbers. The only way Alpinas can be included in the overall total is if they were split between 2002 and 2003 numbers (which is certainly possible, but then there's no itemized accounting for the Alpina Blue cars, etc.).

Take whatever time is needed. You're the only one who can provide this information, so I'll wait patiently and continue working on the project of printing all build sheets for the US cars from the archives site.

That's actually incredibly fast, considering the work you had to do. I'm anxious to see how the Alpina totals correlate with total Z8 production, since they're included within the overall VIN range.

Many questions will be answered. Thanks again.

I have crunched the numbers of the first 290 produced cars of the Z8. All these cars are a kind of “special”. Special in sense of pre-production, press car etc. Of these “specials” 260 are EU and 30 US cars. The first car was produced on december 9 1998 and car 290 was produced on march 13 2000.

The first 101 cars were pre-production cars ( EU 83 and US 18). These cars were probably used for fine tuning the production and as (EU) press car, Exhibition car, Photo car and development vehicle without conservation.

66 cars were press cars: 38 stayed in the German speaking countries and 11 were US cars.
To Portugal, Canada, Ireland/England , Spain, Sweden and Danmark 1 car was delivered. Japan, Italy and Holland got 2 cars and France 5.

40 cars were exhibition cars. 35 were German cars ( German version and German on-board documentation) Denmark, Canada, US , Italy and France became 1 each.

There were 6 photo cars ( Brochures etc?) 5 stayed in Germany and one went to the US.

31 production cars were prepared for dealer presentation all over the world. 12 were for the Gulf region ( only 1 car had Arabic on-board documentation) Ireland/England got 6 cars, Italy 4, Germany 3, Portugal 2 and France, Sweden, South Korea and Japan got 1 car

The last category is the “development vehicle without conservation” I don’t know what the purpose of the cars was, but there were 8 of them. 4 stayed in Germany, 2 went to the US and Denmark and Canada got 1 too.

Any idea of what the ultimate disposition of these cars was? Sold to the public, destroyed, used for the DE program?

I really don'y know Bill but a US car with low numbers (AH60000 - AH60030) is one of the "specials". Last year one popped up in Dubai!

You have really done a great job breaking down the production numbers. This information makes me wonder what the VIN is for the first U.S. car...I'm #24.

Ron. the first produced US car was AH60000 (1999-1-21). Your car was produced almost a year later.

My question should have been, I wonder what the VIN is/was for the first car imported for sale and not as a pre-production, press car, photo car or dealer presentation car.

Since Ron's Z8 is 60024, it is one of the pre-production variety outlined above.

    M/Y 2002 US Alpina: 174
    M/Y 2003 US Alpina: 281
    M/Y 2001-2002-2003 ECE Alpina: 99

Total 555 Alpinas produced. We archived 554 cars. One is missing. That one car does not have 920-Alpina Registration option code. Thats why we could not locate it.
The third document gives some information about special paint schemes of Alpinas and Z8s. Also WBS prefixed cars.

Great information, Hattat. On quick review, it is interesting to see the color division between U.S. and EC, with almost all of the Alpina Blue cars going to Europe along with the rare Stratus and Hellrot cars. U.S. got a handful of Alpina Blue cars with the remainder being Silver and Black.

Thanks for finding this information. It is great that all of this new data is becoming available.

Great Job, thank you for that work.
Now we habe 455 US Alpinas and 99 ECE Alpinas instead of 450 US and 105 ECE.
I am just wondering, where the difference comes from?
From my knowledge all blue US cars went to Canada, but I will have a closser look in it.

Burchard Bovensiepen, Alpina's Founder kept the last one (#555) maybe this one was not registered. BTW all the EU Alpina's show an AF number on the list, but they were re-batched by an Alpina VIN

    Hallo Karsten,

But maybe AF80159 is #554 :-) Or do you have access to a Alpina register where you can link the production numbers to the VIN?

I did some google search and I found pictures of 555 including a picture of the dome were the VIN is shown. It is not very clear but I only see the Alpina Vin and on the place were the BMW VIN should be ( at 2 o'clock) I see nothing.Maybe my assumption is correct

Thanks for the Data and the listing, great value.
I will try to find out the rumor of #555.
US cars just had the options of silver or black, not more.
The blue cars where very early cars.
Does anyone has a good contact to Alpina to verify the numbers?

Note that 62370 is the only US Alpina that is Titanium with Cream-Black Interior, and none in that color combo in EU, either.

And only 3 EU and 5 US standard Z8s in that color combo, too.
