    Performance Package Availability

The dealers I have contacted tell me the Performance Package is no longer available and they cannot find one from another dealer. Is there anyone who knows where I might find the PP? My 2002 Z8 as best I can tell is in perfect condition with no damage (12k miles) but, I would prefer to have the PP to protect from any future issues.

Good idea to protect your Z8 with the performance package. Others have written that while the performance package kit is no longer available the individual parts can be ordered. Did you just pickup your car?

    Hi,
Have you tried contacting: Matt Carver, Shop Foreman at Peter Pan BMW (650)222-2898 Mobile?

Thanks, Ed. I will try to order the individual parts. I have the parts numbers. This is my second Z8, purchased last year from a FL collector. This car is an exact duplicate of my first Z8, purchased new in 2001 : Jet Black/Crema . It has 12k miles. I found my original car in Belgium and it is being used regularly by its new (4th) owner.
Again, I appreciate your comments. All the best to you,

    Bob

Hi Bob, One other thought - I have found that Canadian dealers seem to somehow have access to parts that US dealers do not sometimes, even though everything comes from Germany. Perhaps get your dealer to call one of the dealers here and ask. When I had mine installed, I believe it was still available, but very difficult to find, and my dealer here in Canada had no issues sourcing the parts. Perhaps they ordered the individual pieces as Ed suggests, but it was seamless for me. It was also cheaper here somehow. My dealer is BMW Store in Vancouver so perhaps worth a call to them?

    Rtenges,

I have never thought that the cross piece (from one fender well to the other) had much to do with protecting the fender wells from being damaged (bulging) when the shocks bottom out on a bad bump. The cross piece makes the installation tricky since it barely fits between the engine and the hood. When I added the (very deceptively named) Performance Package to my Z8 the cross piece was included in the package so I had it mounted. If you are buying the parts separately I would consider leaving the cross piece out.

Others may have a different opinion.

I will consider that. Thanks very much, Phil.

If I cannot source the parts in the US I will certainly contact the dealer in Vancouver. Thanks.

Pleasure to meet you on the forum Bob!

One other thought that came to mind with Peter's recommendation to contact Matt at Peter Pan BMW. If you are local to the SF Bay Area I would highly recommend Matt and his crew. If you are not, the PP installation can be tricky and it is best to have someone perform this work who has experience.

Welcome back to the Z8 community and I hope we have the opportunity to meet in person some day.

Nice meeting you as well, Ed. I am in Wisconsin so, given current conditions and my age (77), I will probably not be in your area any time soon. But, I will be careful with the install, if I can find all the parts. I hope to meet you as well, some time in the future. Enjoy your Z8. I know I do.

Bob and Phil - I would not leave the crossbar out. Whether it is critical part of the strut bracing or not I am not an expert on, but not having that piece on definitely would lead to a lot conversation and doubt as to the car "really" having had the true protection or not when the time to sell the car comes one day (hopefully a long, long time from now). Can you imagine the comments on Bat?

Great to see another Z8 in the Midwest as well! Welcome back as a second time owner! I am in Iowa (Des Moines) and have had mine on the beautiful Western Wisconsin backroads and most likely will again even if with my buddies in our PCA group.

    Skip, Bob,

When you consider the politics I agree with installing the strut. It is a tricky installation especially with the strut. Find a reputable place that has installed a PP before. If that is not available perhaps there are detailed installation instructions somewhere - anybody?

It irks me that BMW calls it a Performance Package when in reality it is fixing a design flaw. Yes, the strut somewhat provides additional torsional strength but the principal reason for the "PP" is strengthening the soft aluminum fender well in the area of the shock tower attachment.
