    Our Watches

While I was following our 'Z8 watch thread' I was thinking about the possibility that people with a same taste of cars could very well have a same taste of watches. What about a 'watch thread' ? I am guessing that most members own more than 1 watch, but I am interested in our favourite watch, the watch we wear most of the time. I will start; a Breitling Chrono Avenger.

Chopard Mille Miglia Jacky Ickx, Edition 2

Not as fancy as many of the watches that will come up on this board, but this is what I wear every day. The photo of the front, is I think, a replica, but pretty sure the rear view is an original. I made a couple edits to the copy I found on line. I think I got it in 2002? Really thinking about getting the "Unofficial Z8 watch" the Glash?tte sport chrono.

CHOPARD Mille Miglia. "Jacky Ickx" Edition 2. Automatic Chronometer-rated Chronograph (fly-back)with Date. Titanium case measuring 39mm. Display case-back has the limited edition number 240/1000 (#238 is mine) and also features the Jacky Ickx signature. Black dial features arabic hours and steel & luminous hands. Chrono counters (for hours, minutes & seconds) and date window between 4 & 5 o'clock. Watch is fitted with vintage style leather strap and titanium buckle. Anti-glare sapphire crystal glass. Water-resistant 50m / 165 ft.

I have a Breitling Wings Automatic I bought in 1999 and a Baume and Mercier and a Tag Heuer both of which I purchased this year.

Unlike Ian, I like my watch faces plain. This gives me a chance of being able to see what the time actually is.

I'm currently wearing the B&M. Last week I was wearing the Tag. Next week I'll switch to the Breitling. I try to wear them all fairly equally, but the Breitling is currently losing out to the new kids

None of these pictures are of my actual watches, but the colors and options are of what I have.

Well I guess it's no surprise that the Glash?tte Sport Evo is my most used (and abused) watch. I have a habit of buying a watch, wearing it till it has to be 'restored', then when it comes back fully cleaned, polished, serviced and like new, I don't have the heart to thrash them again! Thus I have a lovely Zenith chrono and a Brietling Navitimer, both boxed with original paperwork and like new, sitting in the cupboard. However the Glash?tte is a far better made watch than both, and also far more robust. After a good few years of continual abuse it is still going strong, keeping perfect time, and amazingly resistant to the beating it takes on my wrist!

All lovely watches. I like Patek the best. My daily watch is an aquanaut.

It goes with anything and most people have no idea what it is.

BRM Watches. This is one of my favorites and close to Z8 style.

Yes, RRZ8, Bernard Richards Manufacture watches are hand made in Paris.
The BRM watches are inspired on Racing car spirit, they use engine parts for the names, high tech materials, chequered flags on the straps and cases and a lot of racing car details.

I too enjoy wearing the Glash?tte Evo Sport Chrono. I found it in Carmel during the 2008 Monterey event. I had not seen the color combo of the red bezel and silver face before (most all are a combination of black and silver), and having a black/red car it was too perfect to resist. During the scouting trip the year before, we had looked at the Evo Sports in the same shop considering commissioning the Z8 watch. To add to the fun, Z8Doc got one for his 50th birthday that weekend as well. Thus the "unofficial" label.

Like Andrew, mine's a bit rough, er loved.

Here's a shot in the car, and one from Glash?tte's site.

The watch tracks over 30 parameters and you can configure 3 full pages of display as you wish. The particular plot shows your heart rate zone (1 - 5).

Looking at this thread reminded me of an ad I have been seeing in the WSJ over the last few months for Ball Watches. I did not know anything about them so I looked up the web site
    http://www.ballwatch.com/index.php?o...ain&lang=en_US
The company history on the web site is interesting and it is a fun site to spend some time on. I do not know anything about the quality of the watches, but they have a wide variety of interesting designs.

Slightly OT, but my girl got me this great companion to the Glash?tte (and the car of course) for Valentine's day this year. There's contrasting red stitching in the interior too.

I rarely wear it but this is my favorite watch. It is a white gold Rolex Daytona with the meteorite face and a black crocodile strap. My daily watch is a stainless steel Rolex Sea Dweller that has served me everyday for almost twenty five years. My dad had about 20 collector watches which I inheireted but he told me to sell them if I wanted and get something I really wanted. Hence the white gold Daytona.

I've been thinking of getting a black face for my Glash?tte Evo Sport Chrono, and fortunately I happen to walk in to one of the few stores that cary the brand in the bay area after dropping off the Z8 at Peter Pan. Fortunately, fortunately, the Glash?tte west coast rep was there training the staff. So, I inquired about the possibility of swapping faces.

UNFORTUNATELY, in a very German way, Glash?tte will not sell the black face for me to add to my red bezeled watch. They'd prefer that the watches stay in the factory color schemes and designs. They see it as they still own the watch, and I purchased the right to wear it.

It's no biggie, but if I'm going to get a black face, I'll have to 1) find one, and 2) find a jeweler willing to remove the hands as they're not designed to be disassembled without tearing down the entire mechanism. So, I think I'll stand down.

Besides the BMW trademark issues, this is also why Glash?tte is not willing to do a custom Z8 conversion of our watches, nor are the interested in producing customs.

No soup for you, Back of the line!

That must be the shop where I had my band adjusted. The only dealer in the bay area. My local jeweler (Rolex etc) wanted a signed release before they would touch it!

I had to really resist this new guy. Looks amazing in person. The face is actually charcoal, the case is more a shadowy chrome, and the sapphire has a blue tint from the anti-glare coating. The pic reads very flat. Beautiful.

I'm in the final stages of acquiring a beautiful CA Z8 (silver/black) and think the old navitimer will be a nice match. Don't often wear it as it doesn't stand up to the lumps and bumps of being an ER doc. The superocean is for daily wear.

A couple of years back, I was looking for a unique chronograph... looked at the Daytonas and the Breitlings, but wanted something I had never seen before... so I looked and found one of these in an overseas Omega boutique - Omega Speedmaster Broad Arrow Rattrapante - the Rattrapante part allowing you to do split times. Love the watch, and they are as non-ubiquitous as Z8s!

I acquired the "Z" watch, designed by BMW and manufactured by Ventura, a swiss watchmaker.

The watch was for sale since 2000 and they say it was a limited edition of 2000 pieces ( mine has number 2114 ) I bought it for several reasons:

    - The unique design of the folding clasp around the case of the watch forms a “Z” shape, hence the name. This design earned the watch a Red Dot design award in 2001

Our Z8 was rewarded in that same year with the "best of best" Red Dot Award" So IMO there is a connection between designing a Z car and Z watch in same period so it could be considered as the Z8 watch ...now I am rambling :-)

    - The digital display is powered by a patented design by which electricity is produced by a micro generator driven by the centrifugal forced created by the movements of the wrist. The electricity is then stored in an internal battery. I love this kind of techie things ;-)

And the best reason for buying : I am getting fond on this headstrong design

That is nice! I have a few Omega's, including my Speedmaster pic above. I like the brand, BUT it does not offer the value retention that other brands do, such as Rolex or Patek... even in the case of mine, which is really rare. So if you like the watch, get it, but if you are hoping for it to be worth the same as you paid in 5 years, then I would look at another, stronger collector brand.

The one thing I do like is that a number of the pieces are really unique - I have never seen anyone with the Broad Arrow as I mentioned, whereas I see a lot of Daytona's for example.

Another similar watch to this one is the Chopard Superfast - Chopard | Superfast Chrono Split Second - DLC blackened stainless steel | 168542-3001 . Given that Chopard is a private company still, their value might hold up a bit more... I looked at one of these a couple of years back but figured it was somewhat redundant... you can only wear one watch, as my wife tells me, and I have a few more than that already :-)

Ton, that is a very very cool watch! The Chopard is really nice too. But I'm with Ouray, that DSOTM is just, well, out of this world. I was walking by an Omega store and I checked it out- its the first watch I've seen in years that captures my imagination. I ended up getting it! Its really cool.

Congratulations Jerry! The DSOTM watch looks spectacular, and the name reminds me of one of my all time favorite albums . Enjoy!

Cool... enjoy! And ya, good point on the shoes, Norcal... but unfortunately using logic in these discussions usually just gets me deeper into the doghouse! She says one watch at a time, I say one pair of shoes at a time, she says one car at a time... checkmate.

    Thanks fellas.

Just say "yes dear" and then go buy a bunch of cars with watches in them which also have some gift certificates to her favorite shoe and handbag spots. Then One of These Days, you can take some Time to Have a Cigar behind The Wall and contemplate the Brain Damage of your situation.

Just remember just like with handbags, shoes, and cars, you can have Any Colour You Like and make the most of it before you go to The Great Gig In The Sky. (sorry couldn't help me self)

Love Pink Floyd. Great group.... but I always wondered: "by the way, which one's Pink?"
