Help! Separating final drive unit from drive shaft

I'm taking the final drive unit out to put in a Quaife differential. Everything was going fine until the last step: separating the drive unit from the drive shaft. I have taken off the six nuts, but it won't separate. Is there something I have missed? If necessary, where should I apply the force? There are 4 or five layers in that sandwhich where they connect...not sure where the separation is supposed to occur.

addendum: just noticed a notch in the middle layer that might be used to pry the middle layer away from the back layer (towards final drive), but didn't manage to make any progress with a moderate amount of force.

I'd wait till Monday, and call Dana at Peter Pan, (650-204-7550) and ask if Matt there can give you the correct info. I have never attempted such a thing, I had Peter Pan do mine, and they've fitted at least a dozen others, so they will know for sure.

    The mystery is solved:

There are two slots on opposite sides, you need to stick a screw driver in each side and gradually work the two pieces apart. The drive shaft plate sits inside a small lip around the edge of the final drive plate, so you need to work the two pieces about 3mm apart before they separate. The only thing sticking these two parts together is grease.

Remember: look for slots on both sides! Just working one side like I was doing won't get the job done. Hope someone else profits from my mysery. I'm going to buy a better flashlight now.

Good for you, I'm way too mechanically inept to ever try such a thing!
