Help! I've locked my only key in the truk and the doors are locked? Anything I can do?

I feel so stupid. Doors were locked. I unlocked the trunk. Put a few items in the trunk and inadvertently put the key in as well. Now the trunk and doors are all locked. Suggestions? Anything I can do? I suspect I can order a key from BMW but they'll nail me as it is a "Z8 key" (which is really a plain old BMW key with a Z8 plate). Ugh!!!!!!!

Welcome to the stupid club. I did the same thing several years ago, but 250 miles from home. I called a locksmith and he was able to open the car. I remember that it was not cheap.

So sorry to hear, what an annoying way to start the year!

You'll need to open the little flip bin lid behind the passenger seat and get to the manual release, so the locksmith will need to help you there too.

That said, I'd just get a spare key, it's always worth having one incase.

Not that this helps here (and you do need a second key...), but any time we are on road trips with my wife, I have her carry the spare in her purse. I guess it is a little paranoid, but might come up handy one day. Good luck with the locksmith - might cost a few bucks, but should not be that hard for one to do.

Nope. That would be too easy.

I realized that a few minutes after I made this post. So I guess then the trunk release button only works with the key in the ignition?

Any idea what BMW dealer might charge just to make me a new key?

Hey, I just checked. I can open my trunk without the key in the car.

Maybe activating the lock with the key changes this? I don't remember now.

My trunk release in the cabin seems like it is always active, whether the key is around or not. So once you make it into the cabin, it should be one button press into the trunk.

How does the locksmith open the door? A guy came out with little airbags and told me he was going to expand the space to insert a small rod to grab the door handle to open the door. That seems hokey to me and like it could damage the car. Anyone have any experience with airbags or lock picker?

The locksmith came out. Told me how he had just opened a rapper's Bugatti, said he could open anything, and then said he was afraid to break my window. He then tried, for about 45 minutes, to pick the lock.....unsuccessfully. So tomorrow I go to BMW and try and get a new key ordered. No Z8 to drive to the cars and coffee today .....

Well, I suppose the good news here is you will end up with a spare key, which isn't a bad thing. Being that the Z8 key appears to be a standard BMW key with an engraved back plate, my guess is you won't have to pay more than you would for any other BMW (assuming you opt for a standard key). Good luck!
